Monday-Unit 20Lesson 1 Skill: Open Syllable

Teacher will display the word metin the pocket chart, and ask students why the vowel sound is short? Students will then discuss the single vowel is closed in by a consonant. Students will then be told that they will learn during this lesson what happens to a vowel sound when a single vowel is open at the end of a word or syllable. Teacher will then display the word me in the pocket chart, and the teacher will state, “This word ends in a single vowel, and this is a one vowel sound word. It is a one syllable word. Students will then be told that when a word or syllable ends in a single vowel the vowel sound is long. Teacher will then place the diacritical mark for a long vowel above the vowel. Students will be given Student Practice Sheet 20A and will read each word and sentence marking the vowel as a group. Students will then be given Student Practice Sheet 20B and students will divide words into syllables and mark vowels. Students will then be given the following sentences for sentence dictation: We are smart kids. I think she said no. Would you go with me? Students will then oral read the Bonnie Kline Bonnie Kline stories “Ho-Bo Hux”, “Whose”, “Bart’s Sports Car”, “Chicken Pox”, “Just Once”, and then they will be placed in notebook to read each night for homework.

Tuesday-Unit 20 Lesson 2Skill: Red Words/Phonetically irregular words [once] [very] [whose]

Teacher will review all the red words previously taught and display the new red word very, in the pocket chart. Teacher will then display the following sentences in the pocket chart: That is a very big dog. You are very smart. Teacher will then directly state: “The word is very. The word very adds intensity to the word that follows it.” Teacher will then display the red word whose in the pocket chart. Teacher will directly state: “The word is whose. It asks a question.” Next the teacher will display the red word once in the pocket chart. Teacher will state that the word once means at one time. Students will then be given the following sentences for sentence dictation: Once I went to camp. Whose truck is stuck in the mud? Whose is that?It is very hot. That rock is very big. Students will then oral read the Bonnie Kline Bonnie Kline stories“Ho-Bo Hux”, “Whose”, “Bart’s Sports Car”, “Chicken Pox”, “Just Once”, and then they will be placed in notebook to read each night for homework.

Wednesday-Lexia Lab (9:00-9:45)

Students will be taken into computer lab and signed into Lexia Reading Core5 computer program. The computer program is an individualized reading curriculum to help students practice and learn foundational reading skills by interacting with the online program, receiving teacher-led Lexia Lessons, and continuing with independent, paper-based practice activities using Lexia Skill Builders. The data will then be captured and reported to the teacher for planning instruction and helping students reach grade-level benchmarks. After returning from the Lexia Lab students will oral read the Bonnie Kline stories“Ho-Bo Hux”, “Whose”, “Bart’s Sports Car”, “Chicken Pox”, “Just Once”, and then they will be placed in notebook to read each night for homework.

Thursday-Unit 20 Lesson 3 Skill: Suffix -ed

Teacher will display the following sentences in the pocket chart: Bill jumps. Bill jumped. Students will read each sentence as a group. The teacher will then state that the first sentence tells us what Bill is doing now, and the second sentence tells us what Bill already did. Teacher will then state: The –ed on the end of the word jump tells us the action happened in the past. [-ed] expresses time. When [-ed] is added to the end of the word it means past tense or past time. The following words will be displayed in the pocket chart: jumped, lifted, grabbed. Teacher will then state that the [-ed] ending has three sounds /t/, /ed/, and /d/. Students will read a list of words as a group to listen which ending sound they make: added, played, baked, picked, landed, helped, skipped, and walked. Teacher will then pass Student Practice Sheet 20C out and place one under the document camera, and the class as a whole will complete. Students will then oral read the Bonnie Klinestories “Ho-Bo Hux”, “Whose”, “Bart’s Sports Car”, “Chicken Pox”, “Just Once”, and then they will be placed in notebook to read each night for homework. Students will be reminded that there will be a reading comprehension test over “Chicken Pox” and “Ho-Bo Hux” on Friday.

Friday-Spelling Test/Reading Comprehension Quiz

Students will be given the Unit 20 Spelling Test. Students will then oral read the Bonnie Klinestories “Ho-Bo Hux”, “Whose”, “Bart’s Sports Car”, “Chicken Pox”, “Just Once”, and then they will be given a Reading Comprehension Quiz over “Ho-Bo Hux” and “Chicken Pox”.
