Report

Last season Potters won the Norfolk SRA Premier League title for the first time while Diss were promoted as champions of Division One and this week the two clubs met in the first match of the new season with the Premier Division new boys causing something of an upset as they came out on top 17-6. Tom Bobbins beat Paul Field 3-1, James Ramm won 3-2 against Liam Baines while both Martin Levens and Neil Cross won their matches in straight games against Archie Swann and Rob Hambrook respectively. Potters only win of the evening came in the first string match where Jamie Goodrich comfortably beat his former team-mate Steve Maitland 3-0.

Bannatyne’s also won their first match beating Broadland 16-8. Kevin Harvey beat Paul Atterton in straight games while Max Dawson and Chris Reeve both won their matches 3-1 against Jake Bond and Ian Cox respectively. For Broadland Jon Bird beat Andy Wright 3-0 and Steve Moxey won 3-2 against Paul Gedge.

Diss II have taken their first team’s place in Division One and they got their season off to a winning start as they beat East Anglia IV 18-7. Jack Bell, Tom Hunt, Fergus Clark and Lee Harris all won their matches 3-1 beating Gareth Joubert, Nick Stringer, Jonny Lawes and Chris Butler respectively. Paul Harvey who won the fifth string match 3-1 was the Lime Tree Road side’s one winner. East Anglia III had more success when they visited Barnham Broom and beat the home club’s second team 16-7. Wes Hicks and Adie Martin got the home side off to a good start as they both won their matches 3-1 but Nigel Gillick and Hadleigh Farrer both won their matches in straight games while Richard Hunt wrapped things up for the visitors as he beat Adam Goodson 3-1 in the first string match.

Bannatyne’s II also made a winning start to their season as they visited Gresham’s School and beat North Norfolk 15-8. Rod Taylor and Matt Green both won their matches in straight games while Shaun Nicholas beat Ed Watson 13-10 in the fifth. For North Norfolk Jason Gollaglee beat Anthony Baines 3-0 and Martin Guppy won 3-1 against Paul Bradnock.

In Division Two Beccles won 17-3 away to Broadland III for whom Kevin Cooke who beat Rob Sherrington 3-0 was the only winner. Sean Higginbotham, Stuart Supple, Stuart Dewell and Nick Soanes all won in straight games for Beccles. Cromer’s first team have moved en bloc to play out of North Walsham as “Rossi’s Rebels” and they beat North Walsham II 17-8. Henri Paul beat Rob Stimpson in straight games while Ben Herrieven and Richard Keeble both won 3-1 against Ben Harris and Rob Whiting respectively. For Walsham Phil Slack beat Alex Foster 3-1 and Dave Attew won the fifth string match against Alec Burrows 3-2.

Cromer are now fielding just one team and they won a tremendously close Division Three match against league newcomers Bannatyne’s III 18-10. Malcolm Crane won his match in straight games while Martin Sanville came from 0-2 down to beat Alastair Florence 3-2 and John Baker also won 3-2 as he beat Gareth Jones 16-14 in the fifth. For Bannatyne’s Chris Batey also came from 0-2 down to win 3-2 against Stephen Watts and Christian Oliveri also recovered from 0-2 and 4-11 in the third to beat Matt Copeman 3-2.

Barnham Broom III were too strong for Broadland Hunter winning 18-3. Dean Goodrum, Steve Cooper, Stuart Bowes and Wes Hicks all won their matches in straight games while for the Broadland side young Will Henden

beat Ian Osmond 3-1. After being relegated last season Bob Carter Centre II made a good start to their season as they beat UEA II 17-9 with Steve Cunningham winning in straight games, Graham Sibley winning the first string match 3-1 and Marco Valori coming from 0-2 down to win his third string match 6-15 12-15 15-10 16-14 15-13.

Finally newly promoted Oasis made a winning return to this division by beating Fakenham II 15-8. Keane Pye beat Leyton James 3-2 while both Richard Hatch and Richard Clamp won in straight games. For Fakenham Martin Dack won 3-1 and Jason Smith beat Dave Horrex 3-0.
