KateBondMiddle School Band Ensemble Placement Auditions

(For experienced 7th and 8th Grade Musicians)

Where? Auditions will be held in the band room at KateBondMiddle School

When? Auditions will be held during the course of two different weeks in July; students will choose one date and onetime (15-minute appointment) to complete their audition; choices of audition dates are Monday through Thursday, July 11-14, 2011, from 8:00 AM until noon (appointments will be scheduled in 15-minute intervals, four appointmentsper hour; example: 8:00; 8:15; 8:30; 8:45) and Monday through Thursday, July 18-21, 2011, from 8:00 AM until noon (again scheduled in 15-minute intervals; four appointments per hour).

How do I schedule an appointment for my audition? Please place a telephone call to Cynthia Coy, band director, at 901-729-6187. She will schedule and confirm an appointment time for you.

What should I prepare to play for my audition? All students will perform a prepared short solo (or excerpt from a longer solo) or etude. Also, all students will be asked to sightread a short music example presented at the audition. Other additional instrument-specific requirements are as follows:

Flute: Chromatic scale (memorized) from lowest C to the highest note you can successfully play in even, slurred eighth notes ascending and descending; the following major scales (memorized and played at the performer’s maximum controlled tempo in as many octaves as possible ascending and descending): G Major; C Major; and Eb Major.

Oboe: Chromatic scale (memorized) from lowest Bb to the highest note you can successfully play in even, slurred eighth notes ascending and descending; the following major scales (memorized and played at the performer’s maximum controlled tempo in as many octaves as possible ascending and descending): G Major; C Major; and Ab Major.

Bassoon: Chromatic scale (memorized) from lowest Bb to the highest note you can successfully play in even, slurred eighth notes ascending and descending; the following major scales (memorized and played at the performer’s maximum controlled tempo in as many octaves as possible ascending and descending): F Major; Bb Major; and G Major.

Clarinet: Chromatic scale (memorized) from lowest E to the highest note you can successfully play in even, slurred eighth notes ascending and descending; the following major scales (memorized and played at the performer’s maximum controlled tempo in as many octaves as possible ascending and descending): C Major; D Major; and F Major

Bass Clarinet: Chromatic scale (memorized) from lowest E to the highest note you can successfully play in even, slurred eighth notes ascending and descending; the following major scales (memorized and played at the performer’s maximum controlled tempo in as many octaves as possible ascending and descending): F Major; Bb Major; and G Major

Alto Saxophone: Chromatic scale (memorized) from lowest Bb to the highest note you can successfully play in even, slurred eighth notes ascending and descending; the following major scales (memorized and played at the performer’s maximum controlled tempo in as many octaves as possible ascending and descending): D Major; Eb Major; and F Major

Tenor Saxophone: Chromatic scale (memorized) from lowest Bb to the highest note you can successfully play in even, slurred eighth notes ascending and descending; the following major scales (memorized and played at the performer’s maximum controlled tempo in as many octaves as possible ascending and descending): D Major; Eb Major; and F Major

Trumpet: Chromatic scale (memorized) from lowest G (F# Optional) to the highest note you can successfully play in even, slurred eighth notes ascending and descending; the following major scales (memorized and played at the performer’s maximum controlled tempo in as many octaves as possible ascending and descending): F Major; G Major; and Bb Major

F Horn: Chromatic scale (memorized) from lowest F to the highest note you can successfully play in even, slurred eighth notes ascending and descending; the following major scales (memorized and played at the performer’s maximum controlled tempo in as many octaves as possible ascending and descending): F Major; G Major; and Bb Major

Trombone/Baritone B.C.: Chromatic scale (memorized) from lowest F to the highest note you can successfully play in even, slurred eighth notes ascending and descending; the following major scales (memorized and played at the performer’s maximum controlled tempo in as many octaves as possible ascending and descending): Ab Major; F Major; and G Major

Baritone T.C.: Chromatic scale (memorized) from lowest G to the highest note you can successfully play in even, slurred eighth notes ascending and descending; the following major scales (memorized and played at the performer’s maximum controlled tempo in as many octaves as possible ascending and descending): Bb Major; G Major; and A Major

Tuba: Chromatic scale (memorized) from lowest F to the highest note you can successfully play in even, slurred eighth notes ascending and descending; the following major scales (memorized and played at the performer’s maximum controlled tempo in as many octaves as possible ascending and descending): Ab Major; F Major; and G Major

Percussion: Chromatic scale (memorized) from the lowest to the highest notes of the xylophone/marimba ascending and descending with alternating sticking; the following major scales (memorized and played at the performer’s maximum controlled tempo in two octaves ascending and descending with alternating sticking): Ab Major; D Major; and G Major

*Percussionists may choose one instrument of their choice (snare drum; tympani; xylophone/marimba) with which to play their prepared solo/etude.
