Course Description:

Art in middle school is required one trimester in grades six, seven and eight. Students continue to deepen the knowledge and develop skills they learned in the elementary grades in the areas of production and creative expression, art history and culture, criticism, and perception. They use their knowledge of the elements and principles of art in a variety of media, techniques and processes. They judge the merit and significance of artwork and are able to form opinions about artwork and express them using the language of art. Connections between visual arts and other disciplines are emphasized. Middle school students work independently in basic mediums and learn to work cooperatively with others. They come to understand how public art communicates the moral values of a society.

Grade Six art curriculum is closely aligned with the Social Studies curriculum of world history and has a purposeful cultural and historical connection. Factors of time and place are considered through various techniques and media.
