ROGERS PARK MILE OF MURALS 2014

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

About the Mile of Murals.

The Mile of Murals is a community-based public art initiative in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, located on the far north side of the city. The project began in 2007, and is sponsored by the Rogers Park Business Alliance and the Clark/Morse/Glenwood Special Service Area #24. Our ten-year project goal is to paint a full mile of murals along the CTA Red Line track from Estes Avenue to Pratt Boulevard along the Glenwood Avenue train line. The project will result in 19 large-scale murals: ten block-long walls, seven viaduct walls, and two overpasses. New artists and themes are selected annually through a rigorous selection process juried by arts professionals and community leaders. The Mile of Murals project has garnered accolades from the City of Chicago's Tourism Office and the Chicago Tribune, and has participated annually in Chicago Artist's Month for the past several years.

Seven murals have been completed so far, on the following themes by these artists:

2008: “Artistic Movement” - Artist: Damon Lamar Reed (Chicago Public Art Group)

2014 Project Overview.

This summer in Chicago, the Rogers Park Business Alliance and Clark/Morse/Glenwood SSA #24 are continuing the Mile of Murals project with a new installment on the east side of Glenwood Avenue between Greenleaf and Lunt Avenues. The wall is a full city block, with dimensions of 340 ft long x 7 ft high. The architecture of the wall divides it into thirteen sections, but the mural should be designed as one long piece. There are several areas where the wall is in some disrepair- artists are expected to work with these conditions. We are seeking an in-state/out-of-state pair of experienced artists to design and paint the wall together. One artist should be local (from Chicago), and the other artist from out of state. Paints will be provided (Nova for acrylic, Montana for spray). Artists are expected to provide all other supplies. The wall will be power-washed and primed in advance, and sealed at the end. Stipend for collaborative is $17,000. Please not there is no additional stipend for travel or accommodations.

2014 Theme: “Movement : Stillness”.

For this theme, we want artists to consider the juxtaposition between movement and stillness. Between action and inaction. Doing and resting. This general theme can take place through a number of different interpretations, from the formal, to the physical, to the psychological and spiritual. There is no right or wrong way to interpret the theme- we are interested in how YOU as an artist pair will explore the terms and how your styles will complement these concepts visually.
