These rules are in effect for all monohull yachts competing in classes using CRF rating certificates and using either spinnaker or non-spinnaker ratings.

1 GENERAL

1.1 All yachts must present a current CRF Certificate.

1.2 Yachts may only have one valid CRF Certificate at a time. Other limitations on obtaining certificates may apply in the CRF rules.

1.3 These rules do not pertain to yachts racing as a one-design or metre rule class. The Class Rules take precedence.

1.4 Should a conflict occur between these Regulations and the NoR or SI’s for this event, the NoR and/or SI’s will take precedence.

2 SCORING

2.1 CRF Ratings are to be used for all scoring.

2.2 Scoring calculations are to be based on a scratch boat with a CRF rating determined by the Organizing Authority.

2.3 CRF non-spinnaker (base) ratings are to be used unless a separate spinnaker class is specified.

2.4 CRF Spinnaker ratings shall not be scored together with CRF non-spinnaker ratings. The ratings are not calibrated to accurately compare a spinnaker and non-spinnaker yacht.

3 ELIGIBILITY

In addition to the Eligibility requirements of NoR 3, the following will apply for this event. Eligibility of yachts will be determined by sections 4.3.1 and 4.3.2 of these Regulations. For scoring purposes only, yachts must meet these requirements to be scored as part of the overall WoodenBoat Regatta Series.

4 CLASS DESIGNATIONS

4.1 Size Guidelines

4.1.1 The Herreshoff Classic Regatta offers CRF racing primarily for Classic yachts up to 75’ LOA. Yachts larger than 75’ may be considered, if appropriate.

4.1.2 As a guideline, where possible, the Herreshoff Classic Regatta will try to group yachts in a class where the largest yacht is no more than 1.5 x LOA of the smallest yacht in that class. E.g. a 30’ boat races up to a max size boat of 45’. This is a guideline only and does not constitute a rule, and may not be grounds for protest or redress.

4.2 La Belle Class

Yachts larger than 75’ may be provided with a unique class allowing a more appropriate rating band and courses. If established, additional existing parameters for safety and equipment may be promulgated.

4.3 Classes

CRF Classic and CRF Spirit of Tradition yachts shall not be scored together.

4.3.1 CRF Classic

Design, Construction and Materials

·  Full keeled (or keel-centerboard), and split-keel & rudder with or without skeg.

·  Steel, aluminum, fiberglass laminate, and wooden hulled yachts.

·  Fixed Ballast

·  Minimum of 15’ LWL, fully decked, reasonable cockpit excepted.

·  Designed in or before 1971 and built utilizing original materials and methods as designed.

·  Rigged with aluminum or wooden spars.

·  Standing Rigging of rope, wire, or rod (not carbon fiber, Kevlar, Dyneema or Spectra).

Sails (permitted)

·  Cross-cut or mitre-cut design (except spinnakers)

·  Woven fabric (Canvas, Nylon, Dacron as well as more contemporary woven fabrics such as Vectran, Hydranet, etc. are permitted only if used in cross-cut or mitre-cut designed sails).

Sails (not permitted)

·  Radial design (except spinnakers)

·  Any sail utilizing advanced shaping technologies (3DL or similar)

·  Laminate or composite construction or materials such as, but not limited to, Mylar, Kevlar, Spectra, and Carbon Fiber, etc.

Other equipment

·  The use of hydraulic or power winches is not permitted.

4.3.2 CRF Spirit of Tradition

Yachts that evoke the pre-1971 design and/or spirit of Classic yachts, but do not otherwise meet all of the above criteria for a Classic yacht. This also includes Classic yachts that otherwise do not fit the criteria given in 4.3.1 above. For example, using hydraulic or power winches and vangs, contemporary rigging or sails, or those rebuilt utilizing non-traditional methods, materials, or significant hull design changes.

4.4 Spinnaker & Non-Spinnaker Classes

4.4.1 The Herreshoff Classic Regatta will offer separate spinnaker classes if there are a minimum of four (4) comparable (as determined by the Organizing Authority) yachts in each class.

4.4.2 In the event that it is not possible to provide for a spinnaker class, yachts will race in a non-spinnaker class.

5 LIMITATIONS ON HEADSAILS & EQUIPMENT

5.1 A fixed length, non-adjustable, whisker pole or spinnaker pole may be used to wing out a jib on the side opposite the main boom as long as no other headsail, including a staysail, is set in the fore-triangle. This changes RRS 50.2.

5.2 Poles must be fixed at the mast while in use in accordance with RRS 50.2, and shall not exceed 110% of J.

5.3 RRS 50.4, Headsails, is changed to read:

“For the purposes of rules 50 and 54 and Appendix G, the difference between a headsail and a spinnaker is that the width of a headsail, measured between the midpoints of its luff and leech, is less than 50% of the length of its foot. A sail tacked down behind the foremost mast is not a headsail.”

5.4 Non-Spinnaker Class Sail Limitations:

5.4.1 Only one jib shall be carried in the fore-triangle at one time: i.e. drop one sail before setting another. This changes RRS 50.1.

5.4.2 Bona fide double headsail rigs (defined as being properly rigged, including permanent fixed points on deck and on the mast) may carry a fore-triangle staysail that is hanked on to the inner forestay. All headsails must be tacked on the centerline of the boat.

5.4.3 All headsails set in the fore-triangle must be hanked-on or supported in a luff groove for the full length of the stay (except fixed-stay roller furling sails). Flying a headsail on its tack and head only, or on an internal wire luff, is not permitted.

5.4.4 Mizzen staysails are permitted. On schooners, a fisherman or gollywobbler is permitted. Mizzen spinnakers are not permitted.

5.4.5 All yachts shall be limited to sail area as defined in their CRF certificate. This included a 150% max LP for headsails unless otherwise rated, in which case a yacht may fly a headsail up to their max rated LP on their CRF certificate.

5.5 Spinnaker Classes

5.5.1 Yachts in spinnaker classes shall comply with the headsail requirements of Regulation 5.4.

5.5.2 For the purpose of CRF handicaps, a yacht rated using a code zero jib or an asymmetrical spinnaker is a Spinnaker Class boat.
