Online Communications and Marketing Officer
The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), an international conservation organization is seeking a highly experienced, talented, and motivated Online Communications and Marketing Officer. The candidate will report to the Director of Marketing and will be responsible for building AWF’s online presence and leading its online marketing strategy, with the aim of advancing the organization’s mission and programs, raising awareness about large-landscape conservation in Africa, and recruiting, cultivating, and maintaining a core community of online donors and advocates. The Online Communications and Marketing Officer will integrate online messaging, content, and donor campaigns with direct mail and multi-channel fundraising initiatives as appropriate and in cooperation with the Membership, Philanthropy, Corporate and Foundations Departments, and other contributors. The Officer will master and use AWF’s online content management systems utilized in AWF.org, AWF blogs, and the AWF online giving center.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Master and utilize AWF’s online content management systems, including Syntax by Forum One, Convio, Word Press and AWF’s intranet system called InTouch.
- Oversee AWF’s blog initiative by liaising with field staff, posting blog text and photo entries, and coordinating organizational messaging, as overseen by the Director of Marketing.
- Manage AWF’s social networking sites (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and others), including posting content, and further integrating social networking presence with AWF print and membership products. Develop user-generated content for online products.
- Be the eyes and ears of the AWF brand across all online and social media sites and identify opportunities as well as threats in user-generated content surrounding the AWF brand, and report findings to appropriate parties.
- Develop highly engaging online viral initiatives designed to carry the organization’s message and build a vital online constituency; build an online outreach base by exploring rental of e-lists, banner ads, and “permission” marketing through entities like Care2.
- Maintain up-to-date and comprehensive knowledge of the latest online and mobile marketing techniques and best practices, as well as the value of video, audio and podcasting, to advance and propose appropriate and timely enhancements to AWF’s online strategy to further AWF’s cutting-edge vision.
- Propose a strategy for continuing contact with online constituents – acknowledgment, cultivation, renewal, and re-solicitation – for each online constituency: registered users, donors, purchasers, and adopters.
- Work in cooperation with the membership department to coordinate online component of membership campaigns that drive supporters to the Web for information and awareness campaigns, fundraising, or user generated content campaigns.
- Utilize tools like Google AdWords or similar to benchmark and improve AWF’s search engine optimization and content popularity and accelerate natural traffic growth.
- Generate analytic material through programs like Google Analytics on user information and online giving over and against anticipated results, and recommend strategy adjustments to achieve budgeted goals and other metrics.
- Design and disseminate out-going email communications and solicitations in collaboration with in-house Graphic Designer. Generate high-quality email blasts and maintain the look and content of related landing pages, donation pages, blog pages, and supplementary content pages on awf.org, as well as for related responder blasts, e-acknowledgments, e-surveys, or other online marketing and outreach.
- Deliver comprehensive analysis of online initiatives, including impact on donor awareness, revenue generated, and –in collaboration with Membership Department-- impact on direct mail response (and vice versa).
- Understand and manage operations within the contractual, technical, and procedural limitations imposed by existing agreements with Convio, Forum One, and NBS. Prepare and manage invoice approvals for these vendors.
- With AWF constituent information managers, ensure timely and accurate maintenance of the Convio shadow database and Constituent 360 database.
Key Skills, Experience, and Knowledge:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- At least 2+ years in website development or complementary working experience, and preferably some experience within a donor- funded nonprofit organization or constituent oriented issue or product based organization/company.
- Strong interest in conservation, wildlife-focused, environmental, and community improvement issues.
- Experience working in high-traffic website environments.
- Experience/knowledge in developing strategies and managing online programs that directly increase the number of members/donors and net income.
- Actively engaged as a social media user and blogger with profiles established on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social media sites.
- Ability to organize and present issues in a clear, concise and logical manner.
- Strong technical skills, including daily use of web-based tools, HTML code, FLASH, website hosting and programming, and Adobe Photoshop or other relevant design applications.
- Proficiency on both Mac and PC platforms.
- Experience using Convio is preferred, but not required.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, exercise good judgment, and quickly identify and resolve problems with minimum supervision.
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
- Must be flexible, culturally sensitive, and exude a “team” attitude. Must have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with staff, partners, and donors.
- Ability to teach and explain social media successfully to other staff.
