Dixie's Fall Choir Concert tonight at 7PM in the auditorium. The students will be performing works from the Renaissance period, Romantic period, Broadway, and 20th Century and ending with a mass choir performance of the gospel classic "O Happy Day."

Athletic Booster Meeting is scheduled for this coming Monday, November 2nd. We will meet in the cafeteria at 7:30 PM.

“Congratulations to the Dixie Cross Country Team for their performance this past Saturday at the St. Henry Invitational. The boys CC team placed 10th out of 19 teams and was led by Ryan Smith how placed 6th. The girls CC team placed 2nd out of 12 teams and was led by Senior Lyndsey Wehage who placed 8th.

The Dixie CC Team will finish their regular season tomorrow at Scott HS in the NKY Championships, also known as, the Freshman/JV Regionals. Races begin at 4:00. Come out and support the Dixie Cross Country Team.”

Good luck Marching Colonels as they compete at the KMEA Class 5A East Regionals this upcoming Saturday at Tates Creek High School in Lexington, KY.

CAR RAFFLE – There are less than two weeks left to purchase your $10 ticket for a chance at winning a Kia Forte or Kia Sol! The winning ticket will be drawn at halftime of the October 30th Varsity home football game. If we do not sell enough tickets to give away the car we will do a split the pot. More information can be found on the band’s website or from any band member.

Dixie Marching Band still has booths available for their 3rd annual upcoming Craft Show on December 5 from 9am -2pm in the gym. Vendors and crafters of all sorts accepted. Booth rental is $40 for 10x10 space including 2 chairs. This is a fundraiser for our band. Contact Cindy Benken 341-9311 with questions or email . 2009 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Students must visit the Scholastic web site - and register.

They do not have to have an entry (a short story, a group of poems,or a persuasive essay)ready to upload, but it is very important that our students begin to register early.

Then they may downloadtwo copies of theentry form for each piece they will enter. They will also want to print out thecategories of writing with the word limits (also very important), Regional guidelines, etc.

We have two new writing categories this year. They are described at our Region's web site.

We need to encourage students and teachers to check the N. KY Region's web site each Monday or Tuesday for the new postings of writing ideas and workshop opportunities.

Substance Abuse: Truth or Dare

Did you ever play this game when you were young? Well, here’s a new truth for you -- one you may not want to hear: “Young people who have serious emotional problems are more likely to use substances and to become dependent on them.” This quote is from Focus on Prevention, published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Now for the dare: Can you recognize the risk and protective factors in your own children? Everyone has both in their lives. Some risk factors young people face are alienation, stress, social pressures, poor grades, family problems, and curiosity. Protective factors include positive self image, confidence, social coping skills, strong family attachments, parental supervision, good communication, friends, community- or church-based beliefs, and schools with a strong student commitment.

Risk and protective factors constantly interact, affecting each person differently. The trick is to reduce the risk factors, or at least their influences, and increase the protective factors. Here’s one idea: Take a closer look at your relationship with your children. Committed parents are the greatest protective factor children can have. Get involved and stay involved.

Most Valuable Student Competition

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks National Foundation provides more than $3.64 million in college scholarships each year through its three scholarship programs. The application process and deadlines vary for each program. All applications must go through a local Elks Lodge before reaching the Elks National Foundation office. For additional information about our MVS Scholarship program, click here.

Applications for the Elks National Foundation's 2010 Most Valuable Student contest are available online, at your local Elks Lodge, or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Foundation.

2010 Most Valuable Student Scholarship applications, from your schools, must be submitted to the Florence Elks Lodge at 7704 Dixie Hwy. Florence, KY 41042 by November 2, 2009.

The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated applicants in the 2010 competition.

• Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply.
• Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks.
• College students are not eligible to apply.
• Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed; resident alien status does not qualify.
• Male and female students compete separately.

Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need.

All scholarships are in the form of certificates of award conditional upon the full-time enrollment of the winner in an accredited U.S. college or university.

Applications must advance through local, district and state competition to reach the national competition. National finalists will be notified by email on February 1, 2010. To be eligible for an award, national finalists will be required to submit a secondary application online, which will include an essay, aid received to date and college plans. The national finalists will also be required to mail their Student Aid Report to the ENF. These applications are due March 1, 2010.

The Chicago office of the Elks National Foundation will announce the 500 national winners, and notify them in writing, on April 1, 2010. (Many local Lodges, districts and state Elks associations award their own scholarships through this program. These scholarships are not to be confused with the 500 Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarships.)

Ranging from $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year, Most Valuable Student scholarships are for students pursuing a four-year degree, on a full-time basis (minimum of 12 semester hours), in a U.S. college or university.

Requests for additional information should be addressed to the scholarship chairman of the local Lodge or of the Elks association of the state in which the applicant is a resident.
