WEATHER PROCEDURES

DEPARTMENT PROCEDURE REGARDING: Practices, Rehearsals, Student Meetings, Performances, and Contests (Participation exception for State/District Competitions may be granted by direction from LPS Executive Committee members.)

I. DISTRICT CLOSURE DAY (School called off early morning before start):

A. When school is called off in the early morning before school start times, NOTHING WILL BE HELD/NO TRAVEL WILL BE ALLOWED.

II. Continued Closure after First District Closure Day

  1. If bad weather continues and school is cancelled for a second day (or more) the following process will go into effect to determine if practice/rehearsal or a scheduled event canoccur(decision by school administrator). OnlyVarsity practices/contests/majortournaments/events will be allowed; all lower level team practices/contests/meetings will remain cancelled until school resumes.
  2. In the event of groups/teams traveling, school administrative designee will confer with other schools and/or the District Director of Athletics/Student Activities to determine conditions and whether or not groups will travel out of town. All schools headed in the same direction will confer and agree to a common decision on whether to travel or postpone.
  1. Weather conditions MUST have improved since the time school was called off.

DO NOT MOVE ON TO STEP TWO IF WEATHER HAS NOT IMPROVED!

  1. Principal or designated school administrator will check with Supervisor of Grounds to make sure parking lots have been cleared if snow is an issue. Schools should check with each other for consistency of decisions.
  2. If lots have not been cleared, designee will determine with grounds supervisor when and if this will be able to be done.
  3. Designee will then check with District Director of Athletics/Student Activities for clearance for Tournament/Performance, Varsity Athletic teams/groups to practice/rehearse or for contests to take place.
  4. All schools will have clearance prior to any ONE school being allowed to hold practices or major events.

III. Bad weather developing while school is in session

  1. School administrative designee will monitor conditions.
  2. If conditions appear to be dangerous, the school administrative designee/building leadership team will make a decision to cancel all practices/rehearsals after school.
  3. If conditions do not warrant immediate cancellation, students may continue shortened practices/rehearsals after school, but should be released from practices/rehearsals in time for safe travel home. Coaches/sponsors should closely monitor conditions during the practice/rehearsal.
  4. In the event of groups/teams traveling, school administrative designee will confer with other schools and/or the District Director of Athletics/Student Activities to determine conditions and whether or not groups will travel out of town. All schools headed in the same direction will confer and agree to a common decision on whether to travel or postpone.
  5. If a group is to travel to competition on a Saturday, the sponsor/coach will plan with the school administrative designee on Friday to determine a timeline for making a decision on travel and performance. SCHOOL DESIGNEEWILL COORDINATE WITH OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS. Again, common decisions should be made for schools heading a particular direction or in town.
