DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM

DEH 1800L CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE I

Course Description: (To be incorporated into DEH 1800C) This course is designed to provide clinical experience for the dental hygiene student in total patient care. Emphasis is placed on basic principles and concepts of current dental hygiene services, refinement of pre-clinic instrumentation, patient education, treatment planning and radiology.

Performance Standards:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1.Demonstrate clinical competency in providing dental hygiene services through knowledge, technical skill and behavior including:

  1. Medical/dental histories including vital signs
  2. Patient assessment
  3. Dental and Periodontal chartings
  4. Instrumentation
  5. Dental hygiene care planning
  6. Patient oral hygiene education
  7. Dental radiographs
  8. Fluoride and fluoride varnish application
  9. Pain management
  10. Professionalism

By being able to:

  1. Collect appropriate information from the patient, analyze the information and record a complete medical/dental history.
  2. Assess the patient’s oral health status and record the findings of the assessment on the appropriate forms.
  3. Evaluate the teeth and periodontium and record the findings on the appropriate chartings.
  4. Utilize the correct principles of instrumentation necessary for the removal of all deposits.
  5. Analyze the patient assessment information and formulate a dental hygiene care plan specific to the patient’s needs.
  6. Assess patient’s oral hygiene status, and create and oral hygiene education plan specific to the patient’s needs.
  7. Employ the correct technique in exposing and processing dental radiographs specific to the patient’s needs.
  8. Conduct and record a complete dental and periodontal charting.
  9. Assess the patient’s needs and demonstrate the proper technique for applying topical fluoride and/or fluoride varnish.
  10. Assess the patient’s needs for pain management and implementation of pain strategies.
  11. Illustrate professional behavior in all clinical settings as outlined in the State College of Florida Dental Hygiene Clinic manual.
  12. Demonstrate effective response to common medical or dental emergencies.

2. Demonstrate knowledge, technical skills and behavior in:

  1. infection control
  2. student receptionist assignment
  3. student sterilization assignment
  4. special clinic assignments

By being able to:

  1. Practice accepted infection control guidelines in all clinical settings.
  2. Employ management skills during all clinical assignments in the dental hygiene sterilization and receptionist areas.
  3. Apply accepted dental hygiene care practices in all special clinic assignments.
