Dear 7th Grade Parent:

Welcome to SPY!

I am leading your child’s religious education class this year. This is my second year teaching 7th grade here at Seton and I am looking forward to introducing your child to the program.

The program is essentially two-fold: catechesis and community building. We will be using three “mini-courses” in the classroom this year: Exploring the Bible; Meeting Jesus; Being Catholic. Each course consists of 6 lessons. Our first course begins next week. “Exploring the Bible” covers how the bible is organized, a library of stories. Your child will be using a bible in class each week. Each classroom has bibles for our use. When we complete the course, the book will be sent home.

The “community building” part of the program is to help your child become connected with our parish community. The first step is the classroom community, then expending to the Jr. High group and later interacting with the Sr. High students. The idea is to gradually introduce your child to the larger scope of the SPY program and encourage their involvement. Your child should have a calendar listing the activities scheduled for this month and next. This information can also be found on the SPY website: The group activities are part of the program and participation is strongly encouraged.

Generally speaking, I will not give homework – although I have been known to offer a reward for voluntary homework that extends the lesson. This letter is an example of such. I have offered a reward if I get an acknowledgment from you that you received this letter.

I would like you to send me an e-mail acknowledgement to . I will use your reply e-mail address to occasionally let you know what is happening with our class – or the Jr. Hi Spy group. If you are not an e-mail user, please complete the bottom of this note and return it as your acknowledgment. Class updates will be sent home with your child.

This program is different from the elementary program and I recognize that children react to activities differently. I will try to be cognizant of your child’s individual needs. I ask that you let me know if you have concerns about the program or if you think there is something I can do to help your child adjust. Please feel free to call me at home – 740-927-7686 – with your concerns.

Sincerely,

Rose Malott
