Monday, September 27, 2010: Vocabulary Workshop

Bellringer:

·  Objective (standards): Students will practice editing for sentence formation, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation (W.6.8.4, W.6.8.7-10).

·  Procedure: Daily bellringer activity in which students identify mistakes in a piece of writing, write the piece correctly on their papers, and correct the piece on the board as a group.

·  Assessment: This week’s bellringers will collected at the end of the week to ensure that students are following learning procedures. Students will be assessed on the grammatical concepts in the daily bellringer on the upcoming module test from The Learning Institute, as well as the Augmented Benchmark Exam in April.

Mini-lesson:

·  Objective (standards): Students will continue to develop and maintain an adequate body of sight words and add content words to sight vocabulary. Students will also use knowledge of root words and affixes and word relationships to determine meaning, use context to determine meaning of multiple meaning words, use resources to determine meaning of technical and specialized vocabulary, and determine useful and relevant words. Finally, students will use knowledge of Greek and Latin word parts and roots to determine the meaning of subject-related vocabulary and use context to determine meaning of multiple-meaning words (R.11.8.2-7, R.11.8.9-10).

·  Procedure: Class will work as a group to establish and define ten vocabulary words.

·  Assessment: Graphic organizer for this week’s vocabulary words will be collected next Monday for a completion grade. Additionally, there will be a quiz on the words next Monday.


Homework:

·  Finish vocabulary graphic organizer on your own. Due next Monday at the beginning of class.

Tuesday, September 28, 2010: Writing Workshop

Main activity:

●  Objective (standards): Students will practice the entire writing process by producing essays within the MyAccess learning environment (W.4.8.1-W.7.8.11).

●  Procedure: Students will go to the computer lab and work on producing narrative essays.

●  Assessment: Teacher observation, as well as product (narrative essay) of today’s activity.


Homework:

●  Any classwork not finished. Due tomorrow.

●  Continuation of vocabulary and reading logs.

Wednesday, September 29, 2010: Writing Workshop

The Learning Institute Reading Module Test #1 (District mandated), followed by independent reading

Friday, October 1, 2010: District-wide Assessment

Module Test #1 grading and remediation day, followed by independent reading
