December 11, 2015

Current Events: When your child returns from winter break, we will be assessing computation, counting to 100 in 1 minute, recognizing numerals 0-20 (80 random numbers to read in 1 minute), knowing the greater number in a pair, and naming the missing number in a 3 number sequence ( _, 13, 14 or 9,_, 11, or 15, 16, _). Plus, our mid-year PALS assessment will begin on Jan. 6th. A Cub Winter Reading Challenge will be sent home with your child sometime next week. Help your child to read, complete, and return the log in January. We look forward to many of our 1st Grade families joining us for lunch on Thursday, and our class party will be at 2:00 that afternoon.

Language Arts: We continued reading many Jan Brett books working on story sequence, characters, setting, and the story’s problem. We’ve reviewed and practiced upper case letter strokes for N P in Handwriting. We started writing a story about the Gingerbread Babies that we drew.

Math: On Monday, we reviewed and had our geometry test on shapes, which the children did really well recognizing and drawing the features of the different plane shapes. We will continue to review the vocabulary of sides, vertex, vertices, and right angles. Now, we have started working with measurement. We are using non-standard items to measure length. Learning about terms relating to length has been our focus this week. Wednesday, the children made a shrinking sequence of length to form a Christmas tree, and then they decorated their trees. They also used non-standard units to measure 5 different items of their choice with a partner. Please encourage your child to help you measure at home to reinforce the vocabulary of length: long, longer, longest, short, shorter, shortest, tall, taller, tallest, deep, deeper, deepest ; weight or mass: heavy, heavier, lighter, big, bigger, biggest, small, smaller, smallest, balance scales, scales, and non-standard or standard units; ; & volume/capacity: containers, solid units compare, estimate, and equal. For a volume activity next week, I would like each child to bring an empty container (plastic or cardboard—no glass) to use for a math lesson on Monday. Please send a labeled the container with your child’s name, and I will return it to you.

Social Studies: In our Scholastic News, “Holiday Workers,” the children read about different jobs that people do to earn money during the holidays. We discussed the meaning and difference of volunteers and paid workers.
