Culminating Ocean Assignment 25 Points

Objective In collaborative groups, students will research a topic in Oceanography, and construct a multi-media presentation. The goal is to extend upon some of the concepts we have covered or will cover in the oceanography course.

Requirements:

Content: Your Final Product should contain the following.

o  Background/How the topic relates to our curriculum

o  3 Essential Questions based on your research.

o  Relevant Images and Multimedia (video, hyperlinked webpages)

Research

o  At least 9-12 Noodletools cards (3 per student) shared among your group and with Mr. Ketler.

o  Properly formatted MLA Bibliography.

Final Product: A multi-media presentations of your choice, including not limited to: Office 365 PowerPoint, Video, Photostory, Google Earth Tour, Prezi, Google or Weebly site, etc.

Step 1: Choose a Topic (Due Monday 1/4)

Choose an Oceanography topic that you find interesting: Earth’s Oceans, Ocean Exploration, The Ocean Floor, Life in the Ocean, Currents & Climate, Waves, Tides. Conduct some web research, links on 2nd page, or look within your textbook for ideas. Connect your idea with one of the CB Content Skills and Knowledge below.

·  The major divisions of the global ocean (Earth’s Oceans p. 38-45).
·  Properties of Ocean Water (Earth’s Oceans p. 38-45).
·  Interactions between the ocean and atmosphere (Earth’s Oceans p. 38-45).
·  Technologies for studying the ocean floor (The Ocean Floor p. 46-51).
·  Identifying the 2 major regions of the ocean floor (The Ocean Floor p. 46-51).
·  Animal adaptations and ocean floor topography (Life in the Ocean p. 52-57). / ·  Describe surface and deep currents and factors that control them (Currents p. 80-85).
·  Explain how currents affect climate (Currents & Climate p. 86-89)
·  Explain the parts of a wave and how they relate to movement (Waves p. 90-95)
·  Marine Life – With a focus on (Life in the Ocean p. 52-57).

Step 2: Preliminary Research (Notecards Due Tuesday 1/5)

Use some of the sites below to conduct preliminary research. You are not limited to these sites, but they may be a good start. Make 3 note cards in Noodletools and share with your partners and Mr. Ketler.

Step 3: Construct your Project Sketch (Due Wednesday Progress Checkpoint 1/6)

Based on your research create a mind map that includes a brief description of your background information/how it relates to our curriculum and your essential questions. Assign individual responsibilities/due dates. Determine if you need to modify your topic/EQ, and gather more information if necessary.


Step 4: Create Multi-Media Presentation (Progress Check Point Friday 1/8)

Work on your final presentation. Make sure you share project and contact information with each other.

Final Product: A multi-media presentations of your choice, including not limited to: Video, Photostory, Prezi, Google site, PowerPoint, etc…
