CRCT Remediation and Retesting

CRCT Remediation and Retesting

CRCT Remediation and Retesting

All CRCT remediation and retesting will take place during the school year. No summer program or additional testing will be offered for Cobb or non-Cobb students.

Local schools will notify parents of students who need to be retested on state-mandated CRCT retesting after state scores are returned in mid-May. All students will have access to a complete individual score report. Schools will communicate when these become available.

Cobb students in grades 3, 5, and 8 who do not pass the April CRCT administration in the required grades and courses will be provided additional remediation and will be retested during the final week of school. The state mandates a retest opportunity for third grade reading, fifth grade mathematics and reading, and eighth grade mathematics and reading.

If students in the gateway grades (3, 5, and 8) do not pass the required areas in the April testing window, their report cards will indicate that they are retained pending results of a CRCT retest. Results of the retest will not be received before May report cards are distributed. Students must retest to be considered for promotion or placement in the next grade.

Parents will be notified by letter when retest results are received. If students do not pass the retest, retention is still required by state law. Parents or the school may appeal a retention decision following the process outlined in Administrative Rule IKS (Promotion, Placement, and Retention). This rule is located at the district policy site:

Students who require retesting and move to Cobb County School District during the summer from another Georgia school should plan to retest with their former district. All promotion/placement decisions must be made by the former district.

CRCT Frequently Asked Questions

Audience: Parents of third, fifth, and eighth grade students

The goal of the State of Georgia and Cobb County School District is that every student will reach mastery of the current grade level standards by the end of the school year. The CRCT is our state measure of that mastery. This test will be administered to all students in grades 3–8 from April 22 through May 1, 2013.

  1. What happens if my child does not pass the CRCT?

Schools use many assessments in determining a student’s progress. If your child passes the required CRCT in the gateway grades (third, fifth and eighth), promotion will be based on those factors. If your child fails the required CRCT in one of these grades, then state law O.C.G.A. 20-2-282,283,284,285 dictates that your child must be retained regardless of other assessments. Students in fifth and eighth grade must meet standards on the reading and mathematics portion of the test. Students in third must meet standard in reading. Your child’s retention will be indicated on the final report card as “Retained, pending CRCT Retest Results.”

  1. When will my child be given the retest?

Your local school will retest your child at the end of the school year.

  1. Will my child receive any additional help before the retest?

Schools will offer continuing support for students to reach mastery of standards by the end of the year. This effort will intensify in May for those third, fifth, and eighth grade students who are most at risk of not meeting standard. No CRCT Summer School will operate.

  1. When will I know whether my child has passed the April test and the May retest?

Schools will contact students needing retesting in mid-May. Individual reports for all others will be provided at year end. Retested students should receive results late in June.

  1. What if my child fails the retest?

If your child does not make the minimum passing score after the retest (or fails to take the test), state law requires that your child not be promoted to the next grade level.

  1. Is there an appeal to the law requiring retention?

An appeals process exists and can be found in District Rule Promotion, Placement, and Retention (IHE). This process cannot be requested until after district retest scores have been returned. The retest results letter will give further directions.
