RULES AND REGULATIONS:

  1. This competition is inspired by the convention theme and linked to the other competitions through the class title “Your Grand River” as a means to explore creative expression.
  2. The competition is open to members in good standing of a Society/Club (hereafter Society) in good standing with the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA).
  3. Each exhibitor is allowed to submit only one entry in each class. The submission of an entry implies that the exhibitor gives consent to the OHA to make further use of the entry in any way that the OHA designates. Ownership of the entry is retained by the exhibitor.All winning entries will be photographed for possible posting on
  4. All entries must be original, have a horticultural theme, completed in the last five years and not previously exhibited in the OHA Art Competition.
  5. Entries must be registered with the Coordinator, Sharon Nivins, by June 1, 2016.
  6. Painting entries should not exceed 91cm (36”) in any direction including framing. All painting artwork must be finished and ready to hang. Any paintings on canvas must be framed unless the sides of the canvas are an integral part of the image and are painted with no staples or other hardware visible.
  7. All entries must be received on site between 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, July 28 or 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2016. Artwork will not be accepted by mail.
  8. Each entry must have an entry tag with the name, address, Society and District of the exhibitor. Entry tags will be supplied at the Convention by the OHA. Name of the artist should be covered for judging. If the entry is for sale, a business card with the price written on the back can be provided for display during public viewing.
  9. Reasonable security will be supplied; however, the OHA assumes no responsibilities for loss or damage.
  10. Judging and placements will be based on merit. The Judge’s decision is final. Honourable Mention (HM) placements may be awarded at the Judge’s discretion.

Points will be given for class placements and summed across adult competitions to award a new $100 prize to the Society with the highest point aggregate based on:

  1. No removal is permitted until after the competition is closed on Saturday, July 30 at 6:00 p.m. Entries and prizes are to be picked up Sunday, July 31, 2016between 7-9 a.m. or if necessary, by special arrangement with the Coordinators. A signature is necessary for receipt of materials.

Class 1 / “Countryside Community” – Quilt
Make a quilted wall hanging that reflects countryside community. Total perimeter of wall hanging not to exceed 152 cm (60”). Note the article can be square, rectangular, etc. / Wilmot is a countryside community of small towns,
settlements, and farms. The Township of Wilmot is
famous for the annual Mennonite Relief Sale and
Quilt Auction.
Class 2 / “Ein Prosit” – Painting
Create a painting depicting Oktoberfest. Use 22cm x 28cm (8.5” x 11”) paper, any medium (oil, water colour etc.) / The Region of Waterloo is well-known for their annual Oktoberfest. This Bavarian festival celebrates the
harvest and is the second largest in the world after
Munich, Germany.
Class 3 / “Your Grand River” – Woodwork
Create a wood hand carving of any animal, waterfowl, bird or natural items found near a river. Not to exceed real life size. / The City of Cambridge (formerly Galt, Preston and
Hespler) was an early industrial hub for machinery,
textiles and mills and relied on the Grand River.
Class 4 / “Renew with the Blue” – Sculpture
Repurpose any item(s) to create a new garden art object. Max. 46 cm (18”) in any direction. / Recycling is a proud tradition in Waterloo Region.
The first ever Blue Box Program started in Kitchener
in 1983 and now millions all over the world are recycling.
Class 5 / “Kissing Bridge” – Painting
Create a painting of a covered bridge using any medium (oil, water colour etc.). Painting to be on barn board not to exceed 36 cm (14”). / The West Montrose Covered Bridge was constructed
over the Grand River in 1881. It is the last remaining
historical covered bridge in Ontario.
Class 6 / “Pressing Matters” – Dried Picture
Create a garden scene using real pressed and dried flowers and or other plant materials. Put your design in an 8” X10” picture frame (with glass). / The first settler in Ayr, constructed a dam and built a
saw mill and a grist mill. Later settlers were farmers,
artisans and tradespeople. Today, Ayr is a rural
agrarian community with a suburban center.
Class 7 / “Floral Emblems of District 19” - Stitchery
Create any hand stitchery (embroidery, crewel, cross-stitch, petite point, needlepoint, etc.) that features some/all of floral emblems in District 19. / The floral emblems in District 19 include:Daffodil,
Gladiolus, Hollyhock, Jack –in –the- Pulpit, Peony,
Rose, Siberian Iris, Scotch Thistle and Woodland.
Class 8 / “Apple of My Eye!” – Doll
Make a homemade apple doll using a real apple (instructions: not to exceed 30.5 cm (12”) high. Make an outfit and decorate with various dried garden materials. / Wellesley is host to the Apple Butter and Cheese
Festival that features apple butter, apple cider and
all things “apple”.
Class 9 / “Sugar Bush” – Pencil Drawing
Create a pencil drawing that features one or more maple leaves and/or trees. Max 36 cm (14”) in any direction. / The Maple Syrup Festival in Elmira is recognized by
the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s Largest
Single Day Maple Syrup Festival.
Class 10 / “Technology Triangle” – Mosaic
Using triangular shapes, create a mosaic design the represents the conference theme “Experience the Grand”. Max 36 cm (14”) in any direction. / Waterloo is home to Canada’s Technology Triangle
and is a large urban area with many technology
based businesses.
