COMMONWEALTH YOUTH PARLIAMENT

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA

6th to 10thNovember 2016

The Jersey Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is seeking to identify one young person from the Island aged between 18 and 29 to attend the 8thCommonwealth Youth Parliament, which will be held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canadafrom 6th to 10thNovember 2016.

Over 60 young people from across the Commonwealth will take part in the Youth Parliament, participating in parliamentary proceedings such as question time and debates and votes on legislation and other propositions. There will also be education sessions led by experienced parliamentary officials and opportunities to network with other participants.

The Jersey CPA Branch is looking for a candidate who has an interest in current affairs and, in particular, Commonwealth and parliamentary matters. Theyoung person selected will need to demonstrate potential leadership qualities, good communication skills and a sound understanding of the way in which Jersey is governed. The Jersey Branch will meet the costs of the participant’s travel to Canada.All accommodation and other expenses in Canadawill be met by the British ColumbiaBranch.

Connétable Len Norman, Chairman of the Jersey CPA Branch, said “A number of young people from Jersey have attended previous Commonwealth Youth Parliaments and they have always found the event to be a valuable experience with the chance to meet young people and parliamentarians from across the Commonwealth. Several have come back to Jersey and taken an active interest in local politics and one, Deputy Sam Mézec, is now an elected member of the States.I would encourage any young person with relevant skills and experience to put their name forward and I would also ask parents and others to bring this matter to the attention of any young people from Jersey who are currently out of the Island.”

Young people who wish to apply to participate in this event should send a full CV, a scan of the details page of their passport and a letter of application setting out why they believe they are suitable to represent Jersey to Dr Mark Egan, Honorary Secretary, CPA Jersey Branch, States Greffe, Morier House, St. Helier, JE1 1DD() no later than 5pm on Monday11th July 2016. After an initial selection process a number of shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview in the week of 18thJuly.
