CIAT: Youth Leadership Project

Click it Ticket - Project Description:

The purpose of this project is to promote highway safety among teens and focuses specifically on increasing seatbelt compliance. This project is also intended to be directed by the teens themselves, therefore promoting leadership development and ownership of highway safety issues. “Click it Ticket” is a play on words of the usual slogan of “Click it OR Ticket” in that CIAT rewards students who arrive to school wearing their seatbelts with a “Citation of Good Behavior” and students found not to be wearing their seatbelts with a “Warning: Poor Choice” citation. Those receiving a good citation will also be eligible to win at least one grand prize of a $100 gift card, which is 10 times the amount typically assessed to a teen found not wearing their seatbelt. These grand prizes will be provided by State Farm and THSO, and while schools are encouraged to solicit other small items for student incentives and prize giveaways, no prize given out should be valued greater than the $100 gift card provided by the event sponsors.

Teens will be able to take their citations home to their parents, which presents relevant statistics and resources related to teen driver safety. Teens will also be given educational material on TN Graduated Driver’s License policies (GDL), the risks of using alcohol and drugs, and otherprinted information for teens and their parents regarding teen driver safety.

Project Method Overview:

  1. Identify a faculty, staff, or authorized community leader member to coordinate student activities.
  2. Organize a team of 10 to 20 student leaders.
  3. Conduct youth-led planning meetings to accomplish the tasks on the attached “Project Planning Checklist”
  4. Determine a baseline of seatbelt compliance using the CIAT digital app for smartphones.
  5. Hold the “Click it Ticket” school wide awareness event and present student incentive awards.
  6. Determine a post-event measure of seatbelt compliance using the CIAT digital app for smartphones.
  7. Prepare a presentation of the entire project and its findings.

This Project is supported by the TN Department of Transportation, Tennessee Highway Safety Office, State Farm Insurance Company, Students Against Destructive Decisions, and Community Anti-Drug Coalitions Across Tennessee.

Task / Due Date / Point Person / Status
Decide how you want your CIAT event to look locally:

/ Youth Leaders
Pre- and Post- Event Information:
Plan the logistics to ensure traffic flows, but that each youth are given an equal chance to be observed in the pre and posttests.
  • If you will have more than one location, name or number them for identification purposes.
  • It may be helpful to have walkie-talkies to communicate between stations.
  • You will need to have the CIAT App downloaded on all participants’ cell phones or have a other method of digital or paper ready to go!
/ Youth Leaders
CIAT Event Date Information:
Again, plan the logistics to ensure traffic flows, but that each student driver/passenger has an equal chance to be observed and awarded a “Citation of Good Behavior”.
  • Consider the supplies you will need for the CIAT event day.
  • How many teens will stand at each ticketing station to ensure each arriving student gets a chance to earn a good choice citation?
  • You will need a collection site inside the school for eligible students to enter the drawing.
  • When will you conduct the award drawing?
  • When will you present award winners with their gift cards?
  • What else will your event need?
