The Global Village Project, Inc., a nonprofit organization operating a small private school in Decatur, Georgia serving teenage refugee girls, seeks a dynamic, proven educator to be responsible for newcomer education and emergent literacy development at the school. The academic program at GVP is designed to meet the specific needs of refugee young women with interrupted education and developing English language and literacy proficiency. This position requires a full-time newcomer teacher and coordinator, who will provide leadership to staff in the areas of ESOL, emergent literacy, and developing numeracy.
Requirements:
Teaching degree and certification (primary & middle preferred)
ESOL education, certification, and experience
Three or more years teaching experience
Desired qualifications for the full-time, 10-month position:
Reading Specialist/Literacy Coach
Experience using Guided Reading approaches
Experience using WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessments) with English Learners
Demonstrated high-quality classroom instruction
Leadership experience
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Experience with and enthusiasm for arts integrated learning
Enthusiasm for learning and sharing through presentations & publications
Values aligned with the values and mission of GVP
Experience working in a multicultural community
Experience and enthusiasm for collaboration
The Global Village Project is an accredited special purpose middle school serving teenage refugee girls between the ages of 11-18. The school’s unique strength lies in its community base. More than one hundred volunteers serve as tutors and mentors, providing one-on-one tutoring help and supporting students as they transition to high school and beyond. The Newcomer Teacher & Coordinator must be willing and able to coordinate work with volunteers and other staff and must be open to co-teaching with other content area teachers.
