This is work supervising Registered Nurses. The primary duty of the employee(s) in the positions(s) allocated to this class is to spend the majority of time communicating with, motivating, training and evaluating employees, planning and directing their work; and having the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward or discipline subordinate employees or to effectively recommend such actions.

  • Motivates employees to improve the quality and quantity of work performed.
  • Plans work loads, work flows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
  • Evaluates employees through establishing evaluation criteria and responsibilities and meeting regularly with employees to ensure the established criteria are met.
  • Trains employees in methods for performing an effective and efficient job.
  • Communicates on a regular basis with employees both individually and in staff meetings.
  • Directs the work of employees to ensure best use of time and resources.
  • Plans, organizes, and supervises the nursing care activities within a specific section of an assigned unit of a hospital or within a clinic on a 24 hour basis.
  • Develops and analyzes special nursing care activities for the acutely ill patients of the unit and makes changes in methods and procedures as necessary.
  • Interprets and implements policies and procedures as directed.
  • Develops staffing patterns to meet the needs of the unit on a 24 hour basis.
  • Assists in the planning, development, and implementation of in-service training programs for assigned personnel.
  • Assists in the teaching and evaluation of nursing students and interns in conjunction with the College of Nursing.
  • Makes rounds with physicians and reviews and evaluates patients' progress and nursing care plans.
  • Supervises subordinates in the care of patients and in housekeeping duties and safety procedures.
  • Serves as liaison with other health professionals and support services for the effective implementation of activities for the unit.
  • Directs the nursing work in an emergency room, an obstetrics or pediatrics department, or other major hospital department or clinic as assigned.
  • Maintains records on hospital or clinic personnel and patients.
  • Performs related work as required.

  • Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.

  • Ability to work with patients having a variety of physical problems.
  • Ability to develop nursing care activities for patient groups.
  • Ability to plan, develop and conduct training programs.
  • Ability to determine work priorities, assign work and ensure proper completion of work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.27 and two years of professional nursing experience.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in nursing can substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in nursing can substitute for the required experience.
