IT SYSTEMS SPECIALIST

 One (1) Full-time Vacancy(35 Hrs/wk)

 Grade 9; Anticipated Hiring Range: $40,560 - $44,782 (FY ’16 Rates)

DEFINITION: Technical work in connection with the implementation, repairs, and support of information technology in the City of Northampton; all other work as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Windows servers’ administration, including Active Directory, security and user administration.

Supports network systems used throughout the city-owned backbone fiber loops following industry best practices.

Supports security on computer and network systems located within the city buildings following industry best practices.

Troubleshoot and repair computer hardware, software, printers and related peripherals.

Supports wireless local area networks, mobile devices and telecommunications equipment.

Maintains and upgrades computer and network related equipment. Maintains database application systems.

Assists in maintaining firewalls, routers, switches, and other telecommunications and network security equipment.

Provides helpdesk support to city-wide users, servers and workstations, including VoIP stations.

Corroborates with his/her supervisor regarding priorities among service requests from various departments. Sets long-term objectives in consultation with his/her supervisor and the needs of all City Departments.

Assists in system operations such as reboots, load patches and applying updates to servers and workstations.

Assists with performance of regular backups and/or ensures backups are successful.

Manages assigned projects in a timely fashion.

Performs other similar or related duties as required or as the situation dictates.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or related technical field plus three (3) years of direct experience in a computer technical support role, or related position with Windows, client-server, networking and personal computer systems; or Associate's Degree (or appropriate technical certification) plus 5 years experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Two (2) years of direct experience in a computer technical support role within a Public Safety environment desirable.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill: Knowledge of more than one current operating system including Microsoft Windows for client computers and Microsoft Windows for servers. Knowledge of client-server and PC-based systems. Knowledge of Linux Server operating systems. Knowledge of network technologies.

Demonstrated ability to manage several projects simultaneously, in a timely fashion.

Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships, both written and oral, with co-workers, department heads, department staff, vendors and others inside and outside the ITS department.

Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.

Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and software quickly and independently without formal training; to meet deadlines and work independently; and to communicate well verbally and in writing. Strong organizational and customer service skills.

Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License required. Must have a MA CORI report acceptable to the Police Department in order to hold position.

Physical Requirements:Constant moderate physical effort required to perform work; frequent bending, crouching and reaching required for such tasks as moving, installing computer and network hardware. Position requires the ability to operate a keyboard. Position requires the ability to access all City of Northampton offices on a regular basis, including traversing flight of stairs in various buildings. Position requires fully correctable close vision, color vision and depth perception. Position requires the ability to lift up to sixty pounds.
