Ceramics III Syllabus

Course description:

In this course students will continue to advance their hand building and wheel throwing skills. During the first quarter student will work on the wheel creating cups and bowls. Student will then being to advance their skills creating lidded larges and larger vases. Student will also create a large historical pot using coils!

Units:

Wheel- Cups, bowls, lidded Jars, Large vases. Students will also construct handles for their cups. Students will also learn different methods to handbuild and surface design onto pots constructed on the wheel.

Large historical Pottery- Students will learn about historical pottery and then begin constructing their own using large coils. Student will then carve designs and finish their pottery with iron oxide or glaze.

Supplies Needed:

Students will need a sketchbook or notebookand a Folder. Sketchbooks should meet size requirements. The sketchbook must be at least 5” x 8” and no larger than 12” x 14”. Students MUST bring folders /sketch paper or sketchbook with them every class.

Visual Arts Policies

Expectations:

1. Be on time for class .

2. Be prepared for class-must have folder and sketchbook every class.

3. Work during the ENTIRE class period on ART only.

5. Participate.

6. Clean up table area and put away all materials Students will lose points if they fail to do so.

Marking Period Grade: Each quarter students will be evaluated by points on the following:

-Projects

-Sketchbook

-Art Culture Assignment (1 per quarter)

Project Grades:

Grades for each project will vary, however most projects will be worth 100 -150 points.

In general, students will be graded on:

-Craftsmanship: Level of skill student used while creating their project.

-Effort: Students will be asked to do research and/or preliminary

sketches that will help them work towards their project. Students will be

graded on the quality of their work, as well as if they are actively trying

to improve their skills.

-Originality: unique original designs and ideas.

-Meeting Objectives: Work must meet the objectives of the project

given by the teacher at the beginning of each project.

Sketchbooks:

Students will keep an active sketchbook where they will record notes, plan for projects, and keep inspired through their weekly sketches. Sketchbooks will be checked weekly for up to 10pts.

Things recorded in sketchbooks:

-Artist of the week (presented by Mrs. Hurley

-Project plans (ceramic glaze plans)

-References included (Printed images)

 -Art Culture info

-One sketch per class (homework)

Visual Art Culture Assignment:

Students will be expected to visit a visual art experience and record their findings.

Students must fill out the form given that will help them record
