CEO Diary Update w/c 25th July 2016

To all members

last few weeks update:-

  • Meetings with Nick Garbutt (media adviser) to discuss the ihcp response to the Programme for Government consultation PfG and the documentation needed to follow up on further meetings with senior officials/political representatives – the PfG response is attached for information.
  • I was invited to join the project board meeting on Adult Social Care Reform which was scheduled to take place on 8th July – unfortunately this was cancelled at short notice and I have now secured a meeting with both Sean Holland and Chris Matthews on 1 August to discuss progress on the reform programme.
  • Meeting with COPNI to provide some assistance in their understanding of how the care home fees structure works.
  • Meeting with the Chair and Liz to plan for the Independent Care Awards for Feb/March 2017
  • The Chair and I met the new CEO RQIA, Olive Macleod. We had a very useful meeting with a number of issues agreed – 1) RQIA are happy to participate in a safeguarding workshop for members, 2) RQIA are content to participate in regular workshop events with members,3) My Home Life will be recognised and given credit to in inspections 4) RQIA accept that unannounced inspections in Domiciliary Care Admin sites have little merit and they will move to give notice in future 5) RQIA will participate in the Care Awards – possible presentation of an award.
  • The Chair and I met the CEO and staff at Nursing Homes Ireland – this was a very beneficial meeting with a lot of helpful information shared with us.
  • Domiciliary Care SIG meeting – minutes will follow
  • NICON conference – I input to a GMC panel discussion on regulation
  • International nurse recruitment – all potential requirements have now been gathered from members and a number of ihcp directors are leading this project. Discussions have commenced with a recruitment agent and a further potential opportunity to collaborate with NHI is currently under consideration.

This week:-

  • CEO Forum Domiciliary Care meeting
  • Marie Louise Connolly BBC Health correspondent has been in contact about a potential story she wants to run on delayed hospital discharges – I am engaging with her on how best we can contribute to this if it runs.
  • The Chair and I are meeting the new Commissioner (COPNI) – Eddie Lynch

We are pleased to announce the winners of the recent Growing Support Gardening Challenge which was held as part of Care Home Open Day 2016. Care homes around the country, participating in Care Home Open Day, took part in the Gardening Challenge which aimed to celebrate the great work taking place in care homes and to encourage more people living in care to be active in the garden than ever before.

The winners are:

Celebrating Age - Faith House in Belfast

Residents and children worked together to create a “Train of Life” planter featuring residents and family members with an age span of 100 years!

Celebrating Community – Burnworthy House in South Petherton

Residents ‘conscripted’ soldiers from the Army Air Corps in Yeovilton to help them dig out a new community allotment which will also be used by children from the local school.

All the residents worked together to create an impressive Union Jack flowerbed made of red and white geraniums and blue lobelia

Raising the issues in Adult Social Care

Dear Ciaran
Christie & Co’s Care Consultancy team has been working on a new piece of research titled 'Funding, Staffing & the Bottom Line'. This follows the success of our report last year 'The UK Nursing Workforce – Crisis or Opportunity'.
Our new report provides answers to the key questions in the market including:
• / / An update on current nurse shortages and policy changes since our 2015 research
• / / Local authority funding - including results from our survey of 152 local authorities in England, as well as authorities in Scotland and Northern Ireland
• / / Impact of the National Living Wage
• / / The results of our annual Christie & Co operator survey covering nearly 200 operators (expanded this year to include specialist providers)
• / / Conclusions on whether fee rate rises have been sufficient to offset the bottom line impact of the new Living Wage
• / / Overall conclusions also including reflections on the impact of the Brexit vote

/ / Will the 2016 local authority fee rate increases be sufficient for operating margins to be retained?

Through a survey of nearly two hundred leading care providers including specialist care operators, our research will provide the sector with new benchmarks on these crucial points and provide clarity around the bottom line impact.
You can download the report using the button below. Please feel free to share this with your colleagues.

5. We’re holding a special seminar at Corr’s Corner Hotel in September and it’s aimed at those within the catering and food preparation trade, including those that may work in care home kitchens. The event will focus on providing practical information on how to control food allergens, including sourcing free-from food products, and the legal aspects of food allergen management. We’ll have a practical cooking demonstration as well. The event is free to attend.

I appreciate you may not normally circulate such material to your members but if you feel this could be beneficial to them then I’d be more than happy to send through a PDF flyer for circulation.

I look forward to hearing from you and if you have any queries then please let me know.

Kind regards,

Michael Hills
