This bulletininforms schools that new learning standards for Health and Physical Education have been adopted for Washington schools. Adoption of the Health and Physical Education K–12 Learning Standards occurred on March 31. The Health and Physical Education K–12 Learning Standards describe what each student should know and be able to do at each grade from kindergarten through 8th grade and in high school, in Health Education and Physical Education classrooms across Washington.

Schools are advised to work with their district planning teams to develop a phase-in plan during the 2016–17school year and an implementation plan starting with the2017–18 school year.

As required by state law, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction(OSPI)develops thestate's learning standards (RCW 28A.655.070). Our learning standards are developed through collaborative, public processes led by educators, administrators, and content area experts across the state and nationwide.

The new standards focus on skill-building to increase students’ abilities to make health-enhancing decisions. The standards are age-appropriate, medically-accurate, and build sequentially, meaning that what students learn in one year can impact how and what they learn the next year. In addition to the standards (which are required to be taught), suggested grade-level outcomes were written to be inclusive of all students—an approach that is aligned with state law and that ensures equal learning opportunities for each student.
