Issue #1 September 10, 2008

Ted Carlson, Developmental Math Coordinator

This will be the first installment of updates regarding Developmental Math.

REMINDER:

Please get the student pre-surveys delivered to Dean Mhlaba’s office, C313, by September 19, 2008. The surveys will not be kept together as a class, but we would like to have the sections checked in so we can make sure we have a large sample to use for assessment of the process.

SOFTWARE ON THE (I :) DRIVE

The electronic version of the Developmental Math course materials is now available on the BHCC (I :) Drive. The files are located in the Developmental Math folder. The Portfolio folder has been updated; it includes additional files and a new menu (PORTFOLIOSTART.htm) which accesses all the portfolio materials.

The files are mostly in pdf format to position the graphic images correctly and to keep file sizes manageable.

The materials will also be available on a webpage in the near future.

SOFTWARE IN THE SMART CLASSROOMS

The computers in the Smart Classrooms used for math classes have the following software installed:

AW E-Manipulatives BHCCWIN

Smart Notebook Geometer’s Sketchpad

Also, the (H:)drive, accessible from the Smart Classrooms, includes a Dev Math Portfolio folder.

The portfolio worksheets can be displayed for reference during portfolio activities.

HOUGHTON MIFFLIN SUPPORTING MATERIALS

Supporting materials for the Aufmann/Barker series are on the way. Instructor Editions of the textbook, HM Testing software, textbook website information and supplementary textbook pages should all be available next week.

NOTE:

If your students have new HM [math] Space Student Website Passkeys (Aufmann series) or new MyMathLab Student Access Codes (Clark/Brechner or Lial series)but you are NOT requiring the students to log on to the web support, then would you please collect those unused access cards. You can leave them in the box being used for the Student Pre-Surveys or deliver to Ted Carlson, E321-I.

Please let me know how many students have VERY LOW SCORES on the pretest AND what their placement score was for math.
