Beeline brings adventure back to cycling

Beeline’s intuitive navigation system helps you rediscover your natural instincts

18th January 2017 - Beeline, a compact handlebar-mounted device that strips back navigation to the bare basics in order to reawaken natural instincts and encourage exploration, launches today following a successful Kickstarter campaign by the British start-up last year.

Passionate cyclists and the brains behind the company, Tom Putnam and Mark Jenner, are launching Beeline to the world with a mission to put cyclists back in control of their journeys, rather than following prescribed, over-engineered directions given by the traditional GPS devices.

Tom Putnam, co-founder of Beeline comments:

“Mark and I wanted a navigation system we could rely on, one that is built on the idea that cycling is fun, but can also be used as a tool to explore the surroundings. After months of refining the device to ensure it is both flawlessly engineered and beautifully designed, we are immensely proud to launch Beeline. We know our passionate backers are eager to start using their Beelines, and we hope their availability encourages more people to embrace exploration that Beeline enables - be it on their daily commute or weekend rides.”

Retailing at £99, Beeline is controlled via smartphone GPS and provides instructions that keep riders on course, but leaves the exact route decision-making to them. This style of navigation brings adventure and exploration back to bike rides, whilst providing a steady steer on direction. It allows riders to take charge of their ride, discover new places and see familiar places in a new light.

The key features of Beeline include:

  • The Beeline app - Available for iOS and Android, it’s simple and user-friendly. Just select the final destination and you’re ready to go. If you need to go via a certain place, you can add as many waypoints as you like to your route with a simple drag and drop
  • Sunlight readable, backlit display - An e-paper screen gives you crisp, clear information in all light conditions. A backlight for night riding means you can still find your way in the dark
  • Water and shock resistant - The Beeline device is water resistant, and is encased in a tough silicone attachment mechanism, so will stay put even over the bumpiest of terrain
  • Supercharged - The 350mAh battery is USB rechargeable, and will last for four weeks of regular use before recharging is required. A small icon on the Beeline screen lets you know when you’re getting low
  • Electronics - The Beeline device houses a magnetometer, accelerometer, gyroscope and a Bluetooth receiver. The sensors are used by the device to constantly recalculate your location as you cycle and keep you pointed in the right location
  • User-friendly design - Beeline is designed to fit with your lifestyle, not just while you’re riding, but also when you take it off the bike at the end of your ride. No difficult shaped equipment to carry around, just clip it onto your bag or keys. You can even use it without your bike.

Beeline is available to purchase in three different colours: Charcoal Grey, Hot Coal Red and Petrol Blue, via at £99.

About Beeline

Former management consultants Mark Jenner and Tom Putnam, who met while working at McKinsey, were fed up of getting lost on bicycles navigating around London. With east London design consultancy MAP, the duo have created Beeline, a compass-style device that attaches to handlebars and uses the GPS on riders’ phones to point them in the right direction. The device is now available to buy via the website beeline.co. Beeline intends to revolutionise navigation by making it accessible to the mass market and by making it much more enjoyable. Beeline has been nominated for the Beazley Designs of the Year and is currently on display in the London Design Museum. Beeline is also backed by Andy Murray, who recently won SPOTY and a Knighthood.
