BASIC LAW ENFORCEMENT

OPTIONAL TRAINING

PTI offers several optional courses in which a department may enroll its recruit officer. These courses offer additional training beyond that provided in the 480-Hour Basic Curriculum. They are either offered in the evening following regularly scheduled classes or are computer-based training programs.

OFFICERS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY OPTIONAL TRAINING SESSION UNLESS ENROLLED BY THEIR DEPARTMENT. INDIVIDUAL OFFICERS MAY NOT ENROLL THEMSELVES.

If you have any questions about any of these courses, please feel free to contact either Mrs. Leana Coffey, course secretary, or Associate Director Mike Metzler at 217-333-2337.

The courses are:

NEW!!!! NEW!!!! Patrol Rifle- PTI is offering one session of the new Patrol Rifle Operator course during BLE 2802. Recruit officers who take advantage of this option will stay in class until 10 PM Friday, September 23 and then be in class that Saturday, September 24 from 9-5. They will be free to travel home after class on Saturday (if they want to). This additional course (along with what they already receive in BLE) will certify them in the 20-hour Patrol Rifle course. PTI will provide the weapon and ammunition. Cost is $288. Space is limited to the first 20 registrants.

22-hour Police Spanish Course – this course will be delivered in four 4-hour sessions. The cost for this course is $150 per student, which covers cost of materials. Students who enroll in this course receive training in: arrest; command and control expressions; traffic-enforcement expressions; gathering of field information; and precautionary and danger word recognition.

6-hour Taser Certification – this course is delivered by a Taser certified instructor. At the end of the training, officers will receive a certificate of training in the X26. A 2-second exposure from the Taser is voluntary. The cost for this training is $125 per recruit.

40 Hour Juvenile Specialist Certification – this computer-based training program is hosted by PTI but certified by the state training board and NEMRT (MTU #3). The cost of this training is $120 for the first recruit and $75 for every recruit thereafter. Payment for this course will handled directly through NEMRT and should be arranged prior to the recruit’s arrival at PTI. Contact Mary Rose Pocuis with NEMRT at: 630-896-8860 ext 116 or e-mail:

After registration with NEMRT the recruit will receive individual access to the web based training. Examination dates are scheduled during each BLE class. Other exam dates are regularly scheduled by NEMRT at its North Aurora office. After passing the exam, the officer will be a state certified Juvenile Officer.

Animal Cruelty Laws- PTI offers an optional, two-hour session familiarizing officers with animal abuse, cock and dog fighting, and other animal related crime. PTI will provide certificate of completion for officers who participate. There is no fee assessed to have officers complete this course.

Less than Full Access LEADS/IWIN Certification – these computer-based training programs are state-required for officers who have access to LEADS or the IWIN system. Your officer should bring Department User ID (Agency ORI), Group Name, and password to access the web-based training. As LEADS training is required in order to access the database, departments who choose not to have their officers gain LEADS certification while at PTI must indicate this on the registration sheet that follows. Otherwise, officers are required to attain LEADS certification before graduation. IWIN certification remains optional. PTI will monitor your officer’s completion of these courses. There are no fees assessed to have officers complete these courses.

NIMS Compliance Certification (IS-100LE/IS-700) – these computer-based training programs are offered by FEMA and jurisdictions receiving federal emergency preparedness grants are required to have their personnel certified. No special user ID or passwords are needed and officers can complete this training using personal, department, or PTI computers. PTI will monitor your officer’s completion of these courses. There is no fee to access these training programs.
