Module 1:Working with Young People in Sport
Working with Young People in Sport, offers an introduction to understanding young people and how they choose to participate in sport. Module 1 introduces the concept of the role of the coach and the impact they can haveon the lives of young people engaged in sport or physical activity programmes.The module introduces learners to a basic toolkit of practical activities and essential behavioural management techniques.

Outcome 1: Demonstrate knowledge of factors that impact on personal performance in physical activities

1.1 Identify own area of expertise and areas for development within own practice
1.2 Explain the role of a coach and the factors that can influence positive and negatives outcomes
1.3 Demonstrate an understanding of factors that influence young people’s behaviour

Module 2: Human Connection
This module aims to develop awareness of the importance of building relationships and the ‘human connection’ as part of effective coaching.
Learners will explore theory, research and experiential evidence of human connection within sport but also in the context of leadership. Learners will be challenged to think beyond technique, strategy and outcomes and look at the potential life-impacting influence of their position. It will lead coaches to self-evaluate and consider current coaching methods.
Outcome 1: Review the human connection process and the value this has in building effective relationships
Performance Criteria
1.1 Explain the importance of building relationships within coaching.
1.2 Identify barriers to building relationships within a coaching environment.
1.3 Explain the basic principles of motivation and practical strategies used in coaching.
1.4 Research generational learning theory and the potential impact when working with groups

Module 3 : Benefits of sport and physical activity
This practical module investigates Kolb’s learning cycle to explore the benefits that can be delivered through sport and physical activity.
Sport is recognised as a powerful tool which studies (Larson 2002) have proven that through moderate participation can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, colon and breast cancer, and depression. It can also bring communities together, be a platform for breaking down cultural barriers and allow for community cohesion.
The specific outcomes of a programme must be fully understood by coaches prior to planning and delivery of content. Content should be designed to engage the participants while making progress towards programme outcomes.
Kolb’s Learning Cycle is a practical tool for personal development in ourselves and the young people involved in our programmes.
Outcome1: Investigate the wider benefits of physical activity in sport
Performance Criteria
1.1 Identify the benefits of participation (physical, mental, social and in sport and physical activity
1.2 Provide a definition of a programme and an outcome. Give a specific example of an outcome which could be achieved for young people through participation in a physical activity programme.
1.3 Demonstrate knowledge of Kolb’s learning cycle ( Plan – Do – Review) theory to the practical delivery of a session

Module 4: Communication
This module explores how to develop transferable communication skills through participation in sport. Speaking and listening skills will be developed in a personal social and recreational context.
The module focuses on building understanding around how we use communication in sports, why these are important skills and how they can be transferred into everyday life. Through sports, children and adolescents learn values and skills that will serve them well as they prepare for the rest of their lives. The development of communication as an essential tool for lifelong learning.
Outcome 1: Investigate the need for effective communication in everyday situations
Performance Criteria
1.1. Explain verbal and non-verbal communication between the sender and receiver and challenges which can appear within the communication process.
1.2 Plan, deliver and review a coaching activity to support the development of communication skills.

Module 6 : Goal Setting
The module ‘Goal Setting in Sport’ has been created and designed to facilitate learning in coaching practice. Research has concluded that goal setting is a mainstream sports psychology intervention which can be used as a method to enhance motivation and self-confidence within an individual.
Outcome 1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the link between goal setting as a transferrable life skill.
Performance Criteria:
1.1 Explain why goal setting is an important tool to enable progression in sports performance and in life.
1.2 Give a definition of both a long term goal and short term goal and give an example of both in the context of physical activity
1.3Explain the SMARTS method and give an example of how this could be used in physical activity or sport.

Module 7 : Conflict Resolution
This module provides an in- depth understanding of conflict resolution and how to apply the theory to practice in a sporting environment.
Conflict can have negative connotations. The unit explores how conflict is a natural process is inevitable, necessary and normal, and that the problem is not the existence of conflict but how we handle it.
Outcome: Describe practical tools for dealing with conflict, aggression and challenging behaviour in a sports setting.
Performance Criteria
1.1 Define the concept of conflict and how it affects our interaction with others
1.2 Explain the factors that can escalate conflict
1.3 Explain key diffusion techniques and apply these in a role play scenario
