Art 203 ADVANCED DRAWING III SLO

Produce a series of advanced level drawings showing development from idea to completed form using a visual vocabulary of marks, design and drawing media. A rubric will be used to assess their ability to apply the appropriate drawing techniques, design structures and drawing media to compositions.

Produce drawings with advanced level color applications and light logic to create successful compositions. A rubric will be used to assess their ability to create color and light effects when applied to drawn compositions.

Description of Assessment Method:

During the last class session students were asked to make a drawing of a shoe (still life exercise.)They were not given any restrictions except paper size. Media or style was not assigned. They could observe a real shoe or conceive an image from their heads. They were under a time restraint (ten minutes) so that composition planning, choice of media and style would tend to reveal how the course objectives were integrated into their personal drawing expressions. This was a third level course and had five students so the whole class is part of the assessment. Two other faculty members besides the instructor contributed to the analysis by critiquing the drawings for assessment.

1. Students were required to use a visual vocabulary of advanced drawing marks that when placed on a plane, create an image of a still life object (shoe.)

2. Advanced drawing students would be able to incorporate a demonstration of shading (value system) and light (light logic) that indicates color (note: monochromatic as well as using hues would be acceptable.)

3. Students had to incorporate marks into a framing (on the paper) through a compositional strategy at an advanced level.

Assessment:

1. Students who could use a visual vocabulary of advanced drawing marks that when placed on a plane, create an image of a still life object (shoe.) Completing this task successfully indicates that an advanced student could symbolically use marking to create an associative image (drawing) and could express style, give content and instill meaning into the image through the use of their chosen marks

2. Advanced drawing students who could give a successful demonstration of shading (value system) and light (light logic) that indicates color could create drawings that are more expressive and have a personal interpretation and viewpoint.

3. Students who incorporate marks into a framing (on the paper) through a compositional strategy at an advanced level, indicate an ability to organize, problem solve and express ideas central to the process of drawing.

Since there is a normal spread between average, above average and superior average in the assessment results, this indicates that some students, even at an advanced level are doing advanced level drawing average work. Clearly, participation is a factor. The student whose participation (did not attend all lectures and critiques) was poor throughout the semester was the one who received average grades on all outcomes. The limited time given for the completion of the test assignment indicates some students need more time to complete a highly successful artwork. The outcomes also indicate that factors such as the complete freedom to choose style and interpret the idea of “shoe” might have to be more specific in order to assess a student’s real abilities.

How Results will be used:

The Department agrees on basic forms of drawing: finished developed drawings, quick observational drawings, and sketches. Clarifying the uses of when and how these various approaches should be used will now be an ongoing exercise so students learn to leave enough time to do a quick sketch versus the longer time it takes to finish a more complete image. Having students carry a range of media with them at all times as a regular practice would allow them to pick the best media for any given challenge.Light logic and color systems will be the topics of more quizzes. Design and composition strategies will be examined on a more regular basis to make sure that, even at an advanced level, students constantly review fundamental foundations of drawing.
