Anti-Bullying Policy-Student Information

Rationale-Why are we against bullying?

  • Our School’s Purpose: ‘Lady Lumley’s Loves Learning’ cannot be fulfilled, unless everyone at Lady Lumley’s School feels happy and safe. Consequently, we are committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all of our students so they can learn in a secure atmosphere, based on mutual respect. Bullying of any kind, therefore, is unacceptable at our school and will never be tolerated.

Definition of Bullying-What does ‘bullying’ mean?

Bullying is the use of aggression with the intention of hurting another person. Bullying results in pain and distress to the victim. No one deserves to be a victim of bullying. Everybody has the right to be treated with respect. Students who are bullying need to learn different ways of behaving. If bullying does occur, all students should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. We are a TELLING school. This means that anyone who knows that bullying is happening is expected to tell the staff.

Examples of bullying

Bullying can be:

  • Emotionalbeing unfriendly, excluding, tormenting, graffiti
  • Physicalpushing, kicking, hitting, punching or any use of violence
  • Racistracial taunts, graffiti, gestures
  • Sexualunwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments
  • Homophobicbecause of, or focussing on, the issue of sexuality
  • Verbalname-calling, sarcasm, spreading rumours, teasing
  • CyberAll areas of internet, such as email & internet chat room misuse
Mobile threats by text messaging & calls
Misuse of associated technology , i.e. camera &video facilities

Roles and responsibilities-Who does what?

  • All staff are expected to challenge comments which can be interpreted as ‘bullying’. Staff must not be perceived to be condoning bullying by their silence. So if a bullying incident happens near a member of staff, something should be done about it straight away.
  • If a bullying incident happens where there is no member of staff nearby, students should report the incident to any member of staff as soon as possible after it has happened. The staff member will report it to the respective Pastoral Manager.
  • Pastoral Managers will be primarily responsible for the initial investigation of any allegation of bullying.
  • Pastoral Managers and SLT willbe involved in the decisions regarding sanctions and strategies, depending on the severity of each case. They will also record racist incidents.
