at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria ofWindsor Elementary School, 20008 Courthouse Highway, Windsor, VA 23487

Also in attendance:

A. Katrise Perera, Superintendent

A. Paul Burton, School Board Attorney

Sharon P. Gwaltney, Clerk

Pledge of Allegiance:Mr. Herbert DeGroft led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Welcome:Mrs. Katherine Goff, Public Information Officer, welcomed those present andpresented a PowerPoint budget presentation.

Budget Awareness:Katrise Perera, Division Superintendent, discussed challenges that will be faced during the 2012-2013 budget process. She shared that the Governor of Virginia requested that all state agencies prepare budgets that include 2%, 4%, and 6% reductions andexplained that while instruction had been held harmless up to the current budget year, cuts may be necessary for the 2012-2013 budget.

Phillip Bradshaw, Chief Financial Officer, explained the local budget process and gave a brief overview of how the state formulates the budget for Virginia.

Lynn Briggs, Executive Director for Educational Services, and Katherine Goff asked those present to share their priorities on the following strategic goals:

  • Increase academic achievement for all students
  • Provide rigorous academic programs and career preparation for all students
  • Recruit, hire, and retain a highly qualified, diverse staff
  • Ensure a safe, secure environment that stimulates learning
  • Expand and enhance communications opportunities with parents and community members

Those present were invited to write down ideas on ways the budget could be cut; what they would like to see untouched by budget decisions; suggestions for saving money; any other ideas they had about funding and budget. These were gathered by staff members and will be used during the budget process.

Adjournment:Following the discussion and sharing of budget priorities, the Chairman thanked everyone for their time and for sharingtheir thoughts and suggestions for the continued for the students of Isle of Wight County. He urged the attendees to contactthe appropriate School Board member if they had questions, concerns, or suggestions. The meeting adjourned at 6:48 p.m.
