Afton FFA Member Earns Diversified Crop Production Entrepreneurship State Proficiency Award

OKLAHOMA CITY –Tuff Johnson of the Afton FFA Chapter earned first-place honors in the 2018 Oklahoma FFA Diversified Crop Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency Award area during the 92nd Oklahoma FFA Convention May 2.

Raegan Klaassen of the Hydro-Eakly FFA Chapter and Caitlyn Mack of the Drummond FFA Chapter earned second- and third-place honors, respectively.

Johnson’s supervisedagricultural experience consists of 136 acres of farmland producing wheat, soybeans, sorghum and corn. He also owns several pieces of farm equipment.

“Tuff’s passion is farming and agriculture in general,” said Joe Bob Wright, Afton FFA adviser. “Not only does he love driving tractors and making a profit, but he also loves the behind the scenes day to day dirty work, such as equipment maintenance and repair, record keeping and business planning.”

Johnson said he has learned how to understand a variety of agricultural business needs, from ordering chemicals and fertilizers to gaining important communication skills.

The diversified crop production entrepreneurship proficiency award is designed to recognize students who are using the most efficient management practices available to produce and market two or more crop-related proficiencies, such as grain production, fiber/oil production, forage production, specialty crop production, vegetable production or fruit production.

The 18-year-old Afton FFA member is the son of JustinJohnson and NikiPeterson. His agricultural education instructor and FFA adviser is Joe Bob Wright.

After graduation, Johnson plans on attending Oklahoma State University, majoring in plant and soil sciences.

This award is sponsored on the state level by the Oklahoma Crop Improvement Association, Texas Feed Fat Co. Inc., the Noble Research Institute, and David and Linda Shepard. The national sponsor is CHS.
