COLORADO SPRINGS BRANCH LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS

THE AWARD: The Colorado Springs Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the oldest women’s organization in the United States, whose mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research, will award Local Scholarships for the 2017 fall semester. The number and size of scholarships to be offered will be posted by January 1, 2017.

RESTRICTIONS: The applicant must be a woman, must have earned at least 36 college credit hours but must not be a graduate student, must be currently attending either PPCC or UCCS, must be planning to attend fall semester classes at PPCC or UCCS, and must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00.

DEADLINE: Applications, including the transcripts of grades and recommendations, have to be RECEIVED by THURSDAY March 30, 2017. Applications should be submitted to the AAUW Local Scholarship Committee, 12620 Bridle Bit Rd., Colorado Springs, CO 80908. Letters of recommendation must be sent by the recommender and grade transcripts must be sent by the school to this address.

NOTIFICATION: The scholarship winners will be notified personally by May 1, and the name of the winners will be posted on-line at www.coloradosprings-co.aauw.net.

III. Financial Information

Your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) number is required. It will be sent to you after you send in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form to the federal government along with your tax and other information. The Financial Aid Department at your school can provide more information.

IV. Letter of Recommendation

Ask one person to send in a letter of recommendation, and list that person’s name and position or occupation below. This person may not be a family member unless he/she is also your employer, coach, etc. He/she should be a person such as a professor, adviser, employer, coach, or religious leader who is familiar with your abilities, achievements, personality, and goals and can express these significant aspects of you effectively. This letter must be sent directly to the AAUW Scholarship regular mail address given on page 1 under DEADLINE.

V. Personal Statement (one to two typed double-spaced pages)

The AAUW Local Scholarships Committee is very interested in learning about you and your career goal. Read all four of the topics below, and then use one or a combination of two or more as your diving board to plunge into an explanation of how you arrived at your career goal, how you plan to achieve it, why it is important to you, and how it will be significant to others. We will be looking for a clearly-stated goal and a discussion of these other aspects of the journey toward your goal, all effectively supported with details and examples. We do expect correct grammar and mechanics.

·  Your career goal, including a stated major, with an explanation of why you made this choice and what you hope to do in this field.

·  Academic activities, jobs, and/or volunteer work that led to and/or support your career goal.

·  Community, athletic, religious, or other extracurricular activities that expanded your concept of the right career for you.

  Life experiences (a death, a marriage, a divorce, care of children, abuse, trips or missions, a friendship, a mentor, etc.) that led to your career goal and deepened your passion for it.

VI.Use of Application Material

AAUW-Colorado Springs agrees not to reveal any personal financial information without the permission of the Local Scholarship applicant nor any information that the applicant specifically designates as private. However, I, the applicant, agree to allow AAUW-Colorado Springs to use other application material for purposes such as an introduction at their scholarship awards meeting, an article in their newsletter, and the postings of the winners on their website.
