Education/Training Program Checklist

  1. Make arrangements for a meeting place and schedule the training.
  1. Promote the training in your parish bulletin, parent newsletter, etc., in announcements, and by personal contact. (See enclosed sample “notice”.) A copy of documentation promoting training sessions shall be kept on file at individual location.
  1. Training materials are available from your Pastor, DRE, Principal, or from the Diocesan Office of Human Resources:

  1. Review all materials carefully and view the video. Become familiar with the information.
  1. Duplicate the handout materials, one set for each participant.
  1. Conduct the training session.
  1. Facilitator shall forward completed roster to the diocesan Office of Human Resources. A copy of the roster shall also be sent to the Safe Environment Coordinator of each parish/location represented. A copy shall be kept on file at each location.

Facilitators shall remind participants to return completed paperwork to the Safe Environment Coordinator of their respective parish/location. Safe Environment Coordinator shall forward requests for criminal history checks (along with processing fee) to the Office of Human Resources.

3 min. / 2. What is Child Abuse? / 2. Review this section ONLY from Boy Scouts Q&A Guide. Other items will be addressed during the video. Advise participants that they do not need to take notes during the video. All of the information is in the Boy Scouts Guide.
25 min. / 3. What is the Diocese doing to prevent Child Abuse? / 3.(A) Review diocesan policy, “A Safe Environment for the Protection of Children and Young People”.
(B) Education/Training is mandated for all employees/volunteers who have contact with minors.
(C) Mandated employee applications and volunteer profiles to be completed and filed in personnel records. In addition, a personal/former employer reference check will be required for all new employees and all volunteers.
(D) Criminal Background Check. Advise participants that all clergy, lay employees, and volunteers who have contact with minors will be required to have a criminal history check. (Have participants complete/sign form.)
(E) Code of Professional Conduct - Review/read then have each participant sign statement.
(F) Diocesan Policy concerning Abuse/Neglect of Minors –Have participants read policy, then complete questionnaire and sign statement acknowledging receipt of the revised policy and questionnaire.
(G) Victim Assistance Coordinator – Advise participants that Bishop Jarrell has designated Ms. Carmer Falgout as the Victim Assistance Coordinator, 337-235-5749. This person shall minister to the victim, victim’s family or other persons affected.
70 min. / 4. How do we identify instances or signs of Child Abuse? / 4. Acknowledge Boy Scouts of America for use of their training tape (if this is the tape being used.)

10 min. / 5. What action should one take if they suspect or know of Child Abuse? / 5. Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting - Review basic procedure. STRESS: Certain persons are mandated by Louisiana law to report if they suspect or have knowledge of any child abuse and who to report to. Also stress and conclude with:
(A) “This training is meant to make you aware and alert as to what Child Abuse is, how to recognize signs of abuse, and what to do if you suspect or know that a child is being abused.”
(B) “It is not, repeat not, your responsibility to investigate or know if it is true. It is your moral and legal obligation to only report to the proper authorities. The proper authorities will investigate and will determine whether it is true or not.”
