A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Frederic D. Ogden.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Frederic D. Ogden, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.

WHEREAS, Frederic D. Ogden was born on October 11, 1915, a native of Wallkill, New York and a resident of Lexington, Kentucky, and traversed these earthly bounds on July 3, 2005; and

WHEREAS, persons who devote their lives to the educational excellence of others are to be commended and celebrated and Frederic D. Ogden was one of these fine and distinguished individuals; and

WHEREAS, Frederic D. Ogden earned an A.B. degree from Tusculum College in Tennessee and his doctorate degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland; and

WHEREAS, Frederic D. Ogden was a proud and distinguished educator for over 50 years who taught and studied at many highly regarded institutions including, in the United States, as a professor at the University of Alabama, as a workshop director at Appalachian State University, as a Commonwealth Fellow at Duke University, as a professor and administrator at Eastern Kentucky University, as a Donovan Scholar at the University of Kentucky, and as a U.K. traveling scholar at Alice Loyd and Cumberland Colleges; and

WHEREAS, Frederic D. Ogden was well regarded in this Commonwealth for being the founder of the Political Science Department at Eastern Kentucky University and for his many accomplishments at the University of Kentucky as a Donovan Scholar; and

WHEREAS, Frederic D. Ogden also taught and studied at institutions in India as a Fullbright Scholar at the Indian School of International Studies; as a lecturer at the Harold Laski Institute, Ahmedabad; as a lecturer at the University of Ujjain; and as a lecturer at the University of Delhi; and

WHEREAS, Frederic D. Ogden was a member of the American Political Science Association, the Southern Political Science Association, and the Kentucky Political Science Association, which named him their Outstanding Political Scientist of the year in 1990; and

WHEREAS, Frederic D. Ogden served as a member of the Kentucky Science and Technology Advisory Council from 1967 to 1971, the Citizens Advisory Committee on Compensation of Kentucky Legislators in 1974, the Kentucky Special Advisory Commission of Senior Citizens from 1985 to 2005, and as a moderator for seminars on the Kentucky Constitutional Convention for the Legislative Research Commission in 1977; and

WHEREAS, Frederic D. Ogden was also a member of the Bluegrass Area Development District; the UNA, USA Bluegrass Chapter, Kentucky Division; Phi Kappa Phi, and Christ Church Cathedral in Lexington, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Frederic D. Ogden also proudly published numerous books and articles during his illustrious career in education; and

WHEREAS, Frederic D. Ogden was for 62 years the devoted and loving husband of Jessie "Jay" S. Cupitt Ogden; and

WHEREAS, Frederic D. Ogden was the beloved father of Elisabeth J. Ogden Churchill of Lexington, Kentucky and Dr. Katharine J. Ogden Cornell of Charlotte, North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Frederic D. Ogden was the proud and loving grandfather of five grandchildren and the great-grandfather of one great-granddaughter; and

WHEREAS, Frederic D. Ogden was preceded in death by his loving parents, Fred Ogden and Florence C.Y. Ogden; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Frederic D. Ogden has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Frederic D. Ogden and extends to his family and friends its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 3. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Frederic D. Ogden.
