A. Course Title: ELL 1: Beginning-Literacy

B. Course Description:ELL 1, a beginning-level English language learning course, focuses on the basic building blocks of communication (speaking, listening, reading, writing, and grammar) and life-long learning strategies (notebook organization, flash cards, picture dictionaries, test taking, etc.) within prescribed life-skills strands. Learners will improve English speaking and listening skills through communicative activities and exercises that address real-life needs.Readingand writing activities focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, basic sight words and vocabulary found within the prescribed life-skills strands. Basic Grammar is introduced implicitly, though explicit references to some grammar terms (subject, verb, noun) help learners establish a base for future grammar acquisition. Finally, learners are introduced to basic math and technology as it is integrated into the context of this course.
