Students

The School of Business Studies currently has over 800 students studying either as daytime students or evening students.

Special line rooms and equipment

Oulu School of Business studies has approximately 350 computer servers and a library orientated to the literature of business and administration, library and information services and business information technology. The school also has two video conferencing studios.

Teaching and assessment

The courses usually include lectures, exercises, assignments, case studies, company visits and discussions. Assessment is usually done by examination or assignment.

Assessment is usually given in the following grades (ECTS grades in brackets):

9.2DESCRIPTION OF STUDIES

Oulu School of Business Studies offers the following four degree programmes. The scope of each programme is 210 ECTS credits and it takes approximately 3.5 years to complete the degree. The Degree consists of basic studies (60 ECTS cr) and professional studies (150 ECTS cr).

Degree programme in INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

(all lectures in this programme are delivered in English)

The programme provides students with skills required for employment in international business and import/export related business.

The programme is divided into 3.5 year period as follows:

Degree programme in BUSINESS ECONOMICS

The programme provides students with the skills required for employment in consultancy, managerial or demanding secretarial jobs in the fields of business economics and administration.

Degree programme in BUSINESS INFORMATION SYSTEMS

The aim of the programme is to develop the ability of the student to work in a software company or in the data management unit of an organisation. Oulu School of Business Studies is engaged in cooperation with a number of such organisations in the form of various development projects.

Degree programme in LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES

The programme provides students with vocational qualifications, which will enable them to occupy positions in public or scientific libraries and information service units where expertise in librarianship and extensive data management skills are required.

9.2.1The Degree Programme in International Business

The Degree Programme in International Business (DPIB) is a degree programme in English offered for Finnish and foreign students at polytechnic level. It consists of 140 credits of basic and professional polytechnic business studies, practical training and a Bachelor's thesis leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and "tradenomi" within 3.5 years.

The aim of the programme is to provide students with the qualifications and skills to work creatively as practically oriented professionals in international trade in Finland and abroad.In the Oulu region there are plenty of small and medium-sized high-tech companies, which have established international reputations. Experts of international business are needed in these companies as they are internationalising very rapidly.

Practical training should be carried out during the third year autumn term in Finland or abroad in the field of International Business. Bachelor's thesis is a research or a development project with a strong practical emphasis. It will be carried out in Finland or abroad in co-operation with companies.

OKAIB06 Russian Studies 1,5 ECTS cr (1 Finnish cr)

Objectives: The objective of the course is to give a historical perspective on Russian society and economy, to introduce modern Russia, its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and give advice on how to handle business with Russian partners.

Contents: Russian society and economy, in past and present. Business with Russian partners.

Requirements: Exam or essay.

Literature: To be announced at the beginning of the course.

OKAIB07 European Integration 3 ECTS cr (2 Finnish cr)

Objectives: The objective is to familiarize the students with the European Union, its background, development and areas of responsibility. Special attention will be paid to the functioning of the single market and its implications on Finland as a new Union member.

Contents: The European Union, early stages of the integration, from single market to the European Union, the Treaty on the European Union, institutions, financial framework, internal community policies, common foreign and security policy, economic and monetary union, external relations of the Union, and future prospects. The single market in action, the four freedoms, competition policy and taxation in the single market.

Requirements: Team works, exercises, final examination.

OKAV138 From Meetings to Congresses and Conferences 3 ECTS cr (2 Finnish cr)

Objectives: The student learns how to manage different kinds of meetings and conferences from invitations and travel arrangements to the official dinners and final meetings.

Contents: The different phases related to arranging meetings and conferences, main etiquette.

Requirements: The organising of practice occasions.

Literature: To be announced at the beginning of the course.

OKAV314 Cross-cultural Considerations 3 ECTS cr (2 Finnish cr)

Objectives: To present the effects of culture in a global environment.

Contents: Cultural orientation, culture shock, food and culture, simulations, dialogues of the workplace and social settings.
