ACGME Issues

ACGME Accreditation Letters & Correspondence

/ The AH Pediatrics program received written notification granting them 4 years continued accreditation status. Only one area of concern was noted by the RRC having to do with volume in the PICU. Response and action plan to address this issue is due at the February GMEC meeting.
The MMH Internal Medicine program received written notification granting a temporary increase in residents from 45 to 48 effective January 1, 2008.
The MMH Surgery program received written notification informing them that their application for a beta test site for the Learning Portfolio was accepted.
The OH Internal Medicine program received written notification that their PIF and other documents are due by March 21, 2008. The program leadership is working diligently in readying the paperwork for submission.
The MMH Peds/EM program submitted a written response to the internal review of November 9, 2007. They noted clarification of faculty numbers, curriculum changes for trauma, plans for increasing faculty scholarly activity and faculty appointments, and execution of written Program Letters of Aagreements with program directors in Peds/EM. Also noted was the development of a Peds/EM moonlighting policy.
Review and Approve Appropriate Submissions to the ACGME / The AH Transitional Year program submitted a copy of correspondence to the Transitional Year Residency Review Committee informing them of a change to the program’s curriculum.

Duty Hours

/ The Duty Hours quarterly reports for April – June 30 and July – September 2007 were reviewed. Seven (7) programs are in complete compliance and significant improvements continue to be made in the Internal Medicine and Surgical programs at MMH. It was noted that the first quarter of the academic year is often a difficult one, as residents are much slower in getting their work done, especially PGY1s and new PGY2s.

Patient Safety

/ Dr. Dardik stated that the second Medication Reconciliation Learning Session, held January 10, was once again successful The feedback so far has been positive. Dr. Levine informed everyone that the resources from both sessions are available on the AH Academic Affairs intranet page. The third and final session will be April 3.

Policy & Procedures

/ The Disaster Response policy was reviewed and approved.
Jeff Levine suggested forming a committee to discuss the Vendor Interaction policy and the ACGME guidelines. Dr. Kaye will chair the committee. Drs. Shih, Kuo and Meltzer expressed interest in being on the committee. Dr. Kaye stated that the outcomes will go beyond the GME, to the Board and the Medical Executive Committee.

Report of MDAA

Morchand Center

Mount Sinai Faculty Appointments / With the exception of Radiology, all programs have sent their PGY1 residents to the OSCE scenarios training at MSSM. Program Directors should have received a DVD and evaluation reports for each resident by now. Everyone agreed that it was a valuable experience that we will take advantage of again next year.
Dr. Kaye reminded everyone that the process for applying for an academic appointment at MSSM is a smooth one. Everyone is encouraged to apply.

Prescriber Education Program

Center for Multicultural &
Community Affairs / Mount Sinai has received a grant to teach students and physicians about the pharmaceutical industry and sources of unbiased drug information and have offered participation in the program to AH. Those interested were told to contact Maggie Claudio so that the GME office can coordinate.
Mount Sinai has also offered, free of charge, access to their Center for Multicultural & Community Affairs. As cultural competency is a NJ state requirement and an ACGME requirement, this is a good opportunity for AH. Dr. Levine suggested including this as an item to be discussed by the core competency committee.

Annual Residency Program Survey

/ Drs. Levine and Kaye will distribute residency program surveys to all program directors and asked that they be completed and returned in a timely manner.

Mount Sinai Global Health Conference

/ Dr. Kaye distributed flyers announcing Mount Sinai’s 6th annual global health conference to be held February 29th. This year’s Family Medicine Bi-annual conference, a 5-hour CME program scheduled for May 16, will focus on issues of Global Health and Medical Humanism, in commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of the Benjamin H. Josephson, MD Fund.
