Why Is Humor Effective?

Humor increases persuasion’s effectiveness.

Humor is a distraction that prevents the formation of negative brand associations otherwise formed through resistance, and positive affect creates new positive associations.

It is not businesses doing business with other businesses; it is people doing business with people.

Root word of emotion is motion. To move people, you need to connect to them emotionally.

When you make them smile/laugh, you raise their endorphins, which helps them connect with you.

People only play when they feel safe. If you make them smile or laugh, they are playing with you and therefore feel safe with you.

Once you have people distracted, feeling positive and safe, they trust you.

With their trust, you can get their money.

For very 1% improvement in employee engagement you can see up to a 9% improvement in operating profit.

Difference Between Comedy & Humor:

Humor is just safe comedy.

Comedy + Business = Humor

Dying is easy, comedy is hard.

The bar is set so low for corporate humor, all you have to do is make a valiant effort and you win.

Comedy is more blunt and hard-hitting, humor is more subtle and cerebral.

The Humor Rules:

1)Do not make fun of anyone or any group of people.

2)Keep it above the belt.

3)Stay away from religion and politics.

4)Stay away from drug references.

5)Stay away from violent words.

Comedy Fundamentals:

The secret of comedy is SURPRISE

Misdirection is key to surprise

Self-Deprecation is safe

  • Obvious and Non-Obvious
  • Difficult for women

Brevity is the soul of wit.

Quantity = Quality

Every comedian has a methodology & eventually they throw it out the window & go by their gut

The 3-Step Process

1)Statements of truth.

2)Lists.

  1. Column A - Same
  2. Column B - Opposite
  3. Hard Consonants and Emotional words from Columns A & B

3)I (emotion) (subject) because ___

  1. Hate
  2. Love – reversing the hate statements

Presentation Punch-Up

1)Write your presentation without trying to be funny.

2)Take a sentence and put it on a separate sheet of paper.

3)Write lots of jokes on that sentence.

4)Put the sentence back into the story with the chosen joke.

5)Repeat with other sentences.

Presentation Punch-Up Notes:

Not all sentences are worthy of being funny.

The times to use humor are

  • At the beginning
  • During transition points
  • Just before your key message

Delivery:

Rehearse. Rehearse. Rehearse.

It is about the moment, not the material.
