Essential Questions:
  1. How does figurative language relate to the meaning of a poem?
  2. What strategies can be used to find the main idea and theme of a poem?

Goal/Task:
The goal of this assignment is to get you better acquainted with reading and analyzing poetry and give you the opportunity to make connections. You will select one poem to read, interpret, and analyze. You will use this poem as the centerpiece to draws connections between a song, a work of art, and an original composition with the same theme.
Role:
You will work as the curator of an art gallery. You will analyze each work, explain the connections, and answer the question “what is poetry?” in a personal reflection.
Audience:
Your audience will be visitors of CHEC Galleria and the 21st Century public, who are interested in learning more about the concept of poetry.
Situation/Context:
You are showing that you understand how to:
  • Identify and respond to the effects of form, sound, figurative language, and graphics in order to uncover meaning in poetry.
  • Identify sound (alliteration, onomatopoeia, internal rhyme, rhyme schemes)
  • Identify figurative language (personification, metaphor, simile, hyperbole)
  • Identify graphics (capital letters, line length, word position)

Product/Performance/Purpose:
  1. Select a poem from the list of poems in your packet.
Note: You must have your selection approved by me before continuing with the project.
  1. Analyze your poem by filling out the analysis sheet. Specifically, analyze the word choice and literary devices in order to determine the poem’s theme.
  1. Once you have successfully analyzed the theme of your poem, find a song that you think addresses a similar theme. You will have to analyze the literary devices in the song and draw a connection between the poem and the song’s lyrics.
  1. Then, you will make a connection between your poem and a work of art. You will need to explain how this piece of art expresses the same or similar emotions as the poem.
  1. Next, you will write an original poem, utilizing literary devices that express a similar theme. With this poem, you will explain how you tried to express this theme.
  1. Finally, you will reflect both on the project and on poetry in general
