Purpose / This entry level unit standard is for people who are employed in the rendering departments at meat processing plants and who are required to operate separation and milling equipment during rendering operations.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: start up and operate separation equipment; start up and operate milling equipment; and comply with organisational and statutory hygiene and safety requirements, during rendering operations.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Start up and operate separation equipment during rendering operations.

Rangeseparation equipment may include but is not limited to – centrifuge, percolator drain pan, screw press, drainer, grinder, screen, filter.

Evidence requirements

1.1Pre-start checks on separation equipment are completed in accordance with manufacturers and organisational requirements.

1.2Separation equipment is operated in accordance with organisational and manufacturer’s requirements.

1.3Separation equipment is monitored and adjusted in accordance with organisational requirements.

Outcome 2

Start up and operate milling equipmentduring rendering operations.

Evidence requirements

2.1Pre-start checks on milling equipment are completed in accordance withorganisational and manufacturer’s requirements.

2.2Particle size is in accordance with organisational requirements.

2.3Metal detection equipment is operated in accordance with manufacturer’s requirements.

Outcome 3

Comply with organisational and statutory hygiene and safety requirements during rendering operations.

Evidence requirements

3.1Company supplied clothing, and hygiene and safety equipment are worn and used in accordance with organisational and statutory requirements.

3.2Work methods comply with specified organisational and statutory requirements to minimise the risk of product contamination and injuries to the operator and others.

3.3Contaminated meat products, surfaces, machinery and equipment are handled in accordance with organisational and statutory requirements.

3.4Unsafe and unhygienic conditions are identified and reported to supervisory staff in accordance with organisational requirements.

3.5Equipment, operator and work area cleanliness comply with organisational and statutory requirements.
