Purpose / This unit standard is for people furthering their knowledge in whakairo. It supplements the Toi Whakairo and Whakaraupapa Whakairo unit standards.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: observe spiritual beliefs, practice personal responsibilities; and observe and examine carver’s responsibilities.

1Tikanga and kawa related to the content of the Whakairo Sub-Field refer to specific interpretations and understandings of whakapapa, te reo, symbolism, concepts and representation within a whakairo context. They are distinctive from those within the broader context of Te Ao Māori.

taha – perspective; way of doing things;

mauri – life force;

noa – free;

tuakana – older brother or sister;

teina – younger brother or sister;

wāhi – place;

tapu – sacred.

Outcome 1

Observe spiritual beliefs.

Evidence requirements

1.1Rites of access associated with Māori art practice are observed by employing ritual procedure that accords with hapū or iwi spiritual observance.

Outcome 2

Practice personal responsibilities.

Evidence requirements

2.1Personal ethics are practised by assuming personal responsibility for Māori art practice that accords with hapū or iwi expectations.

Rangemauri, mana, tapu and noa, tuakana and teina, marae tuturu, whare hui huinga.

2.2Respect for nature is practised by assuming responsibility for resource perpetuation that accords with hapū or iwi traditions and the Resource Management Act 1991 and any subsequent amendments.

Outcome 3

Observe and examine responsibilities of a carver.

Evidence requirements

3.1Whakairo practitioner responsibility is examined to determine obligations that accord with whanaungatanga.

Rangewhānau, hapū, iwi.

3.2Whakairo practitioner responsibility is examined to determine obligations that ensure tikanga whakairo.

Rangemauri, mana, tāonga tuku iho.

3.3Whakairo practitioner role is observed and examined for behaviour that ensures mana whakairo.

3.4Whakairo practitioner expertise is observed and examined for standards that ensure toi whakairo.
