Feast of Christ the King

Remember me when you come into your kingdom (Lk 23:42)

************************************

This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Church year and we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. We associate kings with power and wealth, who rule with authority and demand to be served by their subjects. However, the image of Jesus hanging on a cross in Luke's Gospel couldn't be further from that notion. The people in Jesus' time had a similar idea of a king and Jesus did not fit that. The soldiers and leaders mocked Him and jeered Him saying "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself". But, Jesus was a different kind of king. He was the servant king, who came to serve not to be served. He ruled with love not power. Sent by the Father so that we could 'gain our freedom, the forgiveness of our sins'. It is through Jesus that we get a glimpse of God the Father, and what awaits us if we remain faithful to His message of love and service. He is our king and we his followers and if we are true disciples we have a duty to proclaim the kingdom of God here on earth, a kingdom of peace, love, justice, mercy. Sometimes we are weak and fickle, but He still offers us opportunities to turn back to Him. The good thief, is an example to us that if we acknowledge our sinfulness and ask forgiveness, even at the eleventh hour, God is always merciful, He is always faithful. Pope Benedict XVI said “The Feast of Christ the King is therefore not a feast of those who are subjugated, but a feast of those who know that they are in the hands of the one who writes straight on crooked lines”
