Keep America Beautiful is the iconic nationalnonprofit organization that inspires and educates people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment. We envision a country where every community isa clean, green, and beautiful place to live.

The Keep America Beautiful Sue SmithProfessional Leadership National Award honors Affiliate Executive Directors and seniorstaff involved with affiliate leadership who have built and sustained a local or state affiliate with exceptional success. The Award is named in honor of Sue Smith, former Keep America Beautiful Director of Education and Training and current Trainer.

Qualification:

  • Executive Director or lead staff member involved with affiliate development, training or management.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in aforementioned role.
  • Provides exceptional leadership through involvement and engagement at the local and national level, and if applicable, the state level.
  • Shows outstanding support of Keep America Beautiful’s mission and behavior-change based methodology.
  • Inspires other affiliate directors.
  • Implements innovative Keep America Beautiful programs and local initiatives in all impactareas (End Littering, Improve Recycling, and Beautify Communities).
  • Provides leadership at the national level through participation in the National Conference, Committees/Task Forces, or other leadership opportunities and/or the state level through the state affiliate (if applicable) or other related state organizations.

How to Nominate an Individual: Any affiliate leader who possesses the aforementioned leadership qualities is eligible to be nominated or self-nomination. Only those nominations in compliance with these guidelines will be judged.

Executive Summary Guidelines:

  • Microsoft Word document.
  • Summaries must be typed and answers should highlight the number header included below, e.g.,1. Background, before answering questions in that section.
  • Include the nominated affiliate leader’s name in the header of each page.
  • Do not exceed four pages and be sure to number the pages.
  • Use no less than one-inch top, bottom, and side margins.
  • Use minimum 11-point font.
  • Double-space your summary.
  • Please do not use clip art or colored ink in this portion of your entry.

Executive Summary Questions:

  1. Background (25 points). Provide a brief history of the nominee including how he or she first became involved in their Keep America Beautiful affiliate. Include the nominee’s background, qualifications, number of years involved, and other accomplishments.
  1. Achievements (35 points). Describe the nominee’s major achievements at the affiliate and how he or she works with the community to obtain results. Include a description of the activities that took place to obtain results, including the use of Keep America Beautiful programs and/or resources.
  1. Leadership (35 points). Describe the nominee’s leadership qualities. Include how civic groups, the business community, individuals or others were involved in their vision. Describe efforts to change behaviors related to Keep America Beautiful’s Impact Areas: EndLittering, Improve Recycling, and BeautifyCommunities.
  1. Summation (5 points). Provide two to three sentences summarizing the nominee’s leadership efforts and achievements and how they’ve made their community a cleaner, greener, more beautiful place to live.

Supplemental Materials: Include up to three pieces of supplemental material to substantiate the responses in the written executive summary.

Material may include:

  • Photos (that illustrate engagement or impact). PLEASE NOTE: photo collageswill not beaccepted.
  • Press clips.

Awards Submittal: Email Executive Summary and Supplemental Materials (no more than 3 pieces) to by close of business on Oct. 1, 2016. Compress photos and supplemental materials so the total size of the email is under 20MB. Include in the Subject Line the Award Category for which you’re applying.

Judging: Winner will be selected by a volunteer panel of current and past affiliate and Keep America Beautiful leaders, and when applicable Keep America Beautiful National Staff.Judges may request additional materials. Winner will be notified by Dec. 1, 2016. Award will be presented at Keep America Beautiful’s Annual National ConferenceJanuary 24-26, 2017 in Washington, D.C.
