Connections of ZUMBA BROMAC NZ advised that with a more favourable draw tonight that mare would be driven further forward. Stewards approved the change of tactics and the mare was driven accordingly.

T rainer Greg Scott advised that WITCH MASTER would be driven further back from its wide draw. Stewards approved the change of tactics and that horse was driven accordingly.

SIGN OF ORO was held up in the early part of the home straight.

Stewards inquired into THATSWHATSHESAID (Christian Salter) half carting from the bell until passing the candy pole in the back straight. Mr Salter was fined the sum of $200 under the provisions of AHRR 163(3).

RACE 3 – RYAN BACKHOUSE PACE – 2090 METRES

Connections of NITRO BLUE advised that due to the wider draw that gelding would be restrained at the start tonight. Approval was given for the change and the horse was driven accordingly.

WATCH THIS SPOT NZ hung in under pressure rounding the home turn, contacting marker pegs at the 350 meter mark.

ALPINION also had a tendency to hang in in the later stages.

Stewards queried the performance of WATCH THIS SPOT NZ which tired and hung in from the 400 metres. This horse underwent a post-race veterinary examination which revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer Juanita McKenzie stated that in her view the gelding may be affected by a throat problem and it was unlikely the horse would start again in her care.

RACE 4 – BILLY BUTLER PACE – 1609 METRES

LEGENDA which commenced to tire down the back straight has been placed on its last chance to race truly.

A hopple carrying strap on WESTERN DESTROYER became detached at the 500 meters. That gelding then broke and was pulled up. The gear was inspected and was found to be new. Trainer Ben Yole indicated to Stewards he now intends to tape all hopples with his runners to prevent a reoccurrence of this event.

Post –race swab samples were taken from CAMPAIGN DRIVE, winner of the event.

RACE 5 – TOREACE FLYING MILE – 1609 METRES

Stewards inquired into the reasons for NEVER SIGHTED NZ, JARUZELSKI LEIS and VANDE VELDE all being out of position at the candy pole. After taking evidence from the three drivers concerned Christian Salter(VANDE VELDE) and Todd Rattray(JARUZELSKI LEIS) were both fined the sum of $100 whilst Natalee Emery was issued with a reprimand.

HILLVIEW JAKE had a tendency to hang out during the middle stages.

IDEN UP THERE has been placed back in the mobile draw. The gelding which tired to finish beaten 78 meters has been placed on its last chance to race truly.

KOOL MINTZ which lost ground throughout before finishing distanced has been stood down from racing for 10 days and the completion of a satisfactory trial. Driver Natalee Emery reported that the mare had a tendency to wind suck throughout the race.

Rounding the home turn NO ISSUE had a tendency to hang in and as a result SHEAS DELIGHT was tightened and contacted marker pegs.

MARAVILLOSO and THE SYSTEM BLACK momentarily locked wheels near the 300 meters.

GENERAL

Race 5 - Burnie Harness Racing Club - 17 January 2016

Stewards conducted an inquiry stemming from race 5 at Burnie Harness Racing Club which was the Burnie Cup on the 17 January 2016. After taking evidence from driver Taylor Ford (HAPPY SCHNAPPS) and trainer Ben Yole (HAPPY SCHNAPPS). During the inquiry Taylor Ford was accompanied by senior driver Dylan Ford. After taking evidence from both trainer and driver, acting on their own observations and viewing the official race replays Stewards issued a charge to Miss Ford under the provisions under AHRR 149(1) which says “a driver shall not fail to take all reasonable and permissible measures to make sure the horse driven by that driver is given the full opportunity to win or obtain the best possible placing”. The particulars of the charge were that of the driver of HAPPY SCHNAPPS in the Burnie Cup Miss Taylor Ford had after losing a large amount of ground which the stewards assessed to be 70 meters t then decided to commit to a three wide run with over 1200 meters to run and then remain three wide for the remainder of the event which Stewards state was not a reasonable or permissible action given the ground lost at the start and her actions in pursuing this course had failed to then give her drive HAPPY SCHNAPPS full opportunity to win or obtain the best possible placing in the field. After hearing submissions in support of Miss Ford’s not guilty plea Stewards then sustained the charge. After hearing submissions in support of penalty Stewards suspended Miss Ford’s licence to drive in races for 6 race dates commencing midnight 21 February 2016 and expiring midnight 13 March 2016. In determining penalty Stewards considered the level of culpability in this instance andMiss Ford’s driving record. Miss Ford was advised of her right of appeal.
