AHOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DR. JERRY T. MITCHELL, COORDINATOR OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GEOGRAPHIC ALLIANCE AND RESEARCH ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF GEOGRAPHY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AS EDITOR OF THE ATLAS OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to commend Dr. Jerry T. Mitchell for his significant contribution as editor of the Atlas of South Carolina and as a professor of geography; and

Whereas, at Towson University, he earned a bachelor’s degreein history in 1991 and a master’s degree in geography and environmental planning in 1993, andin 1998, he was awarded a doctorate in geography from the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Dr. Mitchell served as an associate professor of geography from 1999 to 2004 at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania and thenreturned to the University of South Carolina where he has served as a faculty member since 2004; and

Whereas, in 2013, the South Carolina Geographic Alliance, a group of K12 educators that advocate for an informed, geographicallyliterate population able to participate and compete in a global economy, developed and published the Atlas of South Carolinawith financial support from the National Geographic Society Education Foundation and the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee and edited by Dr. Mitchell; and

Whereas, illustrating the physical and cultural landscapes of South Carolina with more than fifty full color maps accompanied by interpretive text, the Atlas of South Carolinawas designed to complement K12 classroom instruction around the State; and

Whereas, the atlas is organized in seven sections: Location, Natural Landscape, Early Human Landscape, Colonial Landscape, Antebellum Landscape, Postbellum Landscape, and Contemporary Landscape; and

Whereas, Dr. Mitchellalso serves as the director of the Center of Excellence for Geographic Education, and since 2010, he has served as the editor of the Journal of Geography; and

Whereas, a faculty associate with the Hazards and Vulnerability Research Institute, he has authored more than fifty peerreviewed articles and book chaptersappearing in such prestigious journals asNatural Hazards ReviewandEnvironmental Hazards; and

Whereas, in 2012, he was awarded a Distinguished Teaching Achievement award from the National Council for Geographic Education; and

Whereas, Dr. Mitchell lives in Columbia with his wife and two children; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is grateful for the scholarly and noteworthy work of Dr. Jerry Mitchell as editor of the Atlas of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

Thatthe members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. Jerry T. Mitchell, coordinator of the South Carolina Geographic Alliance and research associate professor of geography at the University of South Carolina, for his outstanding service as editor of the Atlas of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided toDr. Jerry T. Mitchell.
