A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND GEORGE W. LEROY FOR HIS LIFETIME OF SERVICE TO THE AMERICAN LEGION AND TO EXPRESS THE GRATITUDE OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR ALL HIS EFFORTS ON BEHALF OF VETERANS IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Mr. George LeRoy has proudly served the American Legion, working in a variety of capacities including Post Commander and District Commander, and he was selected Legionnaire of the Year in 1994;

Whereas, the American Legion was charted by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutualhelp, wartime veterans organization that now boasts nearly three million members, men and women, in nearly fifteen thousand American Legion Posts worldwide; and

Whereas, in the preamble to its Constitution the American Legion states as its purpose defending the Constitution of the United States, encouraging American patriotism, preserving the memories of those who have served in the United States military, promoting peace, freedom, and democracy, and pledging service to others; and

Whereas, George LeRoy exemplifies the ideals and goals of the American Legion through his decorated military service, his love of God and Country, and his commitment to serving his fellow veterans and all citizens; and

Whereas, George LeRoy was born in Oconee County, South Carolina, to Jessie LeRoy and Lennie Marcus LeRoy as the third of ten children; and

Whereas, he attended Oconee County Public Schools and graduated as Valedictorian of his class from Long Creek Academy; he was captain of his Debate Club and a member of the Christian Athlete Club; and

Whereas, George W. LeRoy is a decorated veteran of the United States Army, having received three battle stars for the three major campaigns he was a part of in Italy during World War II; later he was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service above and beyond the call of duty; and

Whereas, George W. LeRoy has actively served in a number of other veterans organizations including the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans; he was appointed Director of the Lexington County Veterans Affairs Office and was voted County Veterans Affairs Officer of the Year in 1992, 1993, and 1994 by the Disabled American Veterans; and

Whereas, all who know George LeRoy and his beloved wife Vi consider it a blessing and an honor and it is with great pride that the members of the General Assembly recognize George W. LeRoy’s extraordinary contributions to the American Legion and to the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, commend George W. LeRoy for his lifetime of service to the American Legion and express the gratitude of the members of the General Assembly for all his efforts on behalf of veterans in South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. George W. LeRoy of Lexington County, South Carolina.
