2. Compose Cold Essay about goals and expectations for the year (timed writing). Prompt:

1. Introduction to “Seventh Grade”, by Gary Soto, and begin reading together. Have students stop and answer questions as they read. / Activities:
1. Finish reading “Seventh Grade”, by Gary Soto, and have students answer story questions and connect the fiction to the nonfiction article “Seventh Grade Social Changes”.
2. Goals Cold Essay will be passed back to students. They will then seal their essay in an envelope with their names on it to be placed in their writing portfolio and opened at the end of the school year.

2. Mentor Text: from On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King. Discuss Stephen King, his writing genre and mode, read aloud the mentor text, show mentor video clip and IT trailer. / Accommodations:
