Our Security Blankets

Introduction

1. Are you finding your security blankets ripped away?

2. If God sets out to make an unusual Christian: To do His supreme work of grace within you He will take from your heart everything you love most. Everything you trust in will go fromyou. Piles of ashes will be where your most precious treasures used to be. A.W. Tozer

3. I Samuel 19:8-20:1 David is having security blanket after security blanket removed:

I. HIS POSITION 19:8-10

A. Favored 8

David is leading Israel into battle. Saul is hoping the Philistines kill David,

but the Spiritof the Lord was upon David and he was victorious.

B. Fearful 9-10a

In vss. 9, 10 the spirit of evil was onSaul. He would try once again to kill

David with his javelin.

C. Flight 10b

David fled and escaped that night 10b

*In that flight went David’s position. For an undisclosed period of time David

had been promoted. He led in battle, and was a trusted officer of Saul. He

was ‘successful’.

*He fled leaving position…possessions…popularity.

*Each time he ran to someone or something it was removed.

*By 40 I had lost everything…

*When God closes one door, He opens another. Are you suffering loss?

Watch whatGod does next!

II. HIS PARTNER 19:11-17

David fled to the comfort and security of his home.

A. The Discussion 11-12

1. The Peril

2. The Plan

Went…Fled…Escaped

B. The Deception 13-14

What Michal did was not right, but it shows to what length she would go to

protect David. She was willing to risk her own life.

C. The Desire 15

Slay him! Saul sent messengers to slay David in the morning.

D. The Discovery 16

What was the ‘image’ doing in Michal’s house, the house of an Israelite?

*The Hebrew teraphim was normally a small household god.

*It is likely that Michal worshipped this god of the heathen world plus the God

of Israel.

*This was indirect disobedience to the word of God.

*Do you have any ‘little gods’ in your closet. These take the place of the true

God.

E. The Distress 17

*Lies, deception and idolatry mar Michal’s life.

*Now she is confronted by Saul, her father.

*Michal coolly turns around her own words to David and her actions of the

previous nightand pretends that David threatened her, saying Help me get

away or I’ll kill you.

*Saul’s own words identify David as his mortal ‘enemy’. David’s days as an

outlaw, nowbegun in earnest, would continue until Saul’s death.

*Psalm 59 was written at this time. David brings God into the situation

(59:9,10, 13b, 16)

*He knew God!

Another security blanket is ripped away as

the flicker of the home lights fade in the distance.

He would have no more loving touches or home cooked meals.

There would be no one to share his joys or sorrows.

He had done nothing wrong!

III. HIS PRIEST 19:18-20:1

Bible Knowledge: saw not ‘heard’ means they fell into a trance or ecstatic state,

a conditionwhich immobilized them and made them incapable of proceeding.

A. How Inviting 18

*Samuel was the mouth piece of God. He stood for truth and goodness.

*To be near him was to stand in the Lord’s presence. God’s man was your

friend.

*You feel safe.

B. How Irresistible 20, 21

*At Ramah, Samuel had a school of prophets. Saul’s messengers meant to take

David, but they couldn’t. God miraculously had these ‘seminary students’

prophesying. The Spirit of God was upon the messengers and they

prophesied also.

*Saul sends other messengers and they did the same thing. This happened 3

times!

*Wake up Saul! So often we are so self-centered we cannot see what God is

doing.God is working all around us and we can’t see it!

*Who were these who would challenge the Lord’s most high?

*God intervened! God won’t put on us more than He (not we…we are so

weak) can bear!

C. How Invincible 22-24

*Saul is stripped of his royal garments.

*Saul never repented. To question the genuineness of Saul’s prophetic behavior was to

question his legitimacy as king of Israel.

*He was neither a legitimate king nor prophet.

They may not be removed, but none will be held tightly.

God wishes to reign over our lives without one rival, without another substitute.

He alone can occupy that single position of preeminence…

that place of attention and glory.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH A SECURITY BLANKET, IF IT’S THE LORD!

Be patient until His image appears!

Are you clutching that security blanket? Let it go!

Underneath are His everlasting arms!
