ZINO FIRST QUALIFIER FOR FINALS WEEKEND

Wellington's Stephen Zino became the first qualifier for this year's New Zealand Professional Bowls Association's Finals Weekend winning the Scottish International Open Singles qualifying event at the Heretaunga Club in Hastings today. Zino was immaculate on his draw play throughout the day and never dropped a set winning at least one of the sets comfortably in every match. His win in the final over Hawke's Bay's Natarsha Grimshaw 7-7, 9-2 gives Zino a second appearance at Finals Weekend having previously advanced to that stage in 2010.

CLEAN SWEEP FOR STEWART

In a rare feat, Waikato's Wayne Stewart swept all three NZ Professional Bowls Association qualifying events at the Frankton Railway Bowling Club in Hamilton over the weekend. After winning the Ranking Pairs event on Saturday with Gene Gregory, and the Henselite 'Shanghai' Singles on Sunday, Stewart completed the deal by taking out the Scottish International Open Singles qualifier on Monday beating long-time PBA supporter Eric Pattillo from Northland in the final. Stewart only dropped a set once on Monday in the first round surviving a three end tiebreaker against North Harbour's Bart Robertson. It has been a strong return to PBA for Stewart over the last three seasons also playing at Finals Weekend in 2011, and he will be a hard nut to crack this year in Invercargill on September 6-8th.

NEW FACE AT THE TOP

Dunedin's Duane White has capped off a very solid 2012 including winning a Rankings Singles tournament by capturing a place at the 2013 Finals Weekend for the first time by winning the Dunedin qualifier for the Scottish International Open Singles and will go close to overtaking Ken Walker at the top of the 'Race to Oz' rankings when they are released following this weekend's event around the country. White looked to be tiring in the final going down 10-5 in the first set to Ross Munro, but bounced back with a fantastic display of draw bowls in the second set forcing a tiebreak. Munro's last bowl of the set dragged the jack too far to prevent White winning it 8-6, and the momentum stayed with White drawing the shot off Munro in the first two ends of the tiebreak to take the Finals Weekend berth in Invercargill.

TIEBREAKERS ALL THE WAY FOR HARTSTONGE

Southland's Brian Hartstonge survived tiebreakers in every match as he progressed to a Finals Weekend berth beating Bruce Ross in the final at the Waverley Bowling Club in Invercargill on Sunday. Hartstonge started the day as a dark horse having not won a singles match in his debut season in 2012 but handled the pressure of the tiebreak situation well throughout the day to come out an unlikely winner. He is now two matches away from a trip to Scotland when he plays-off against the other venue winners at Waverley on September 6-8th.
